The Perfection (2018)
Original not boring even if it doesn't make complete sense
Be prepared to be surprised at this unpredictable horror movie about classical cellists. I like the format. Something crazy happens then there is an explanation. The story makes only partial sense. There's no way to justify chopping off the hand. So if you think of it the premise falls apart. But whatever it is you won't be bored. Grossed out maybe but not bored.
The Strangers: Prey at Night (2018)
Good cast can't save irritating story
Christina Hendricks isn't usually associated with horror movies. So I tuned in to this movie in Netflix. Fan of Bailee Madison too. They are very watchable actresses. The story is about a family breaking journey in a trailer park. Some wackos attack them. There are some scary moments. Vaguely remember the first movie.
Faults: The lighting is too dark for TV. Why did the guys and the girls separate? Well if you like this kind of over the top horror then this delivers.
One Chance (2013)
Cute and charming story
James Corden is cute and winning. The story is cute and touching from start to finish. This touching story of a fat bullied Welsh man and his journey to opera stardom is perfect for a movie as he overcomes his setbacks and unsupportive father. His wife is a gem. The talent show finale is quite moving.
An enjoyable winner.
Gerald's Game (2017)
Not all Stephen King novels are good. This is not fun horror like they used to be. This one is just sickening gruesome stuff. A dog eating a dead body and cutting her own wrist? Just sick.
When the Bough Breaks (2016)
Check out your surrogate first
This vaguely familiar story is fairly watchable. An affluent African American couple use a surrogate to carry their baby. The surrogate is wacko and obsessed with him. Hasn't Lifetime done something like this? Well this one is quite slickly done. It laggs now and then. Feel free to use the bathroom or do some chores. The acting is fine given the obvious things they portray.
OK for one watch.
Deviant Love (2019)
OMG! This one has a funny plot. Seems like a usual woman going through a divorce falls for wrong guy Lifetime type thriller. But there is a twist I didn't see coming.
He's her estranged cousin. And he's the wacko of the week with delusions and paranoid schizophrenia. Hence the title. How Flowers in the Attic! Just when you thought they had run out of wackos. Even funnier is her reaction after she finds out he is her cousin. Looks like mental illness runs in the family. The actors are quite good including Gail O'Grady as mom of the girl.
Forever in My Heart (2019)
Bad accent and boring story
Pretty scenery and pretty lead stars can't save this grating movie. Will exes reunite before one of them is about to marry? It is set in Ireland. The lead actor has a bad Irish accent that sounds like just whispering everything quickly.
It's predictable because her new fiancé is not as good looking. So obvious.
Undercover Cheerleader (2019)
Promising then fizzles out
Of the spate of cheerleader movies on Lifetime this one seemed to have some promise. The lead actress is pretty and the story about going undercover to expose bad deeds in the squad seemed interesting. After some silly false leads the ending seemed not to fit with what went on before.
Not worth it if you had to choose one of the recent Cheerleader movies.
The Current War (2017)
A mess - a documentary would have been better
What a waste of a good cast. This is a messy incomprehensible badly written and badly directed movie.
The Goldfinch (2019)
Surpisingly interesting and unpredictable story
With some concentration this is a touching and different movie that kept me quite interested throughout it's length. A young boy loses his mother in a Met Museum bomb (what a horrid idea to put in people's minds). Nicole Kidman plays a kind mother of a friend who looks after him for a while. He has a drunkard father played by Luke Wilson who comes back for him and takes him to Las Vegas. The horror. From a cultured gentile upbringing with art and music he goes straight into White Trash Land with a versatile Sarah Paulson as a Vegas step mom from if not hell then Vegas. In Vegas he meets a Ukranian boy who gets him hooked on drugs. At the center of this complicated story is a rare Dutch master painting he salvages and hides and a nice furniture restorer who looks after him.
The young actor does all the heavy lifting. Very moving performance. Ansel looks suitably outwardly unscarred as an adult. Doesn't have to act too much. He's not the most emotive actor but it's okay for this role. Nicole does an odd UES lady. I don't know the book so don't know the reason for her Stepford nature.
This is an interesting story with children facing the most horrid adults and some nice ones. Unexpectedly engrossing.
Spider-Man: Far from Home (2019)
Weak story nice scenery
So many effects and grand battles in Venice Prague and London. But such a weak story what they are fighting about is so boring. The racially diverse cast of teens is good but they aren't very charming. Jake Gyllenhaal is miscast as a villain. He talks like someone in an indie drama movie. In fact they all seem silly.
The Cheerleader Escort (2019)
Poor cheerleaders what next?
A college student cheerleader has some financial difficulties paying her tuition. Some wealthy older men who support the school get cheerleaders as escorts. The lead actresses are pretty and they cheer well. Although it deals with sleazy subject matter it's feels okay.
The ending feels a little too neat for her. Everyone is so okay with sleeping with a guy for money. Did she pay him back? I Guess is isn't high school. So she can do what she wants.
The Perfect Date (2019)
Unfunny and unromantic
The stars have no chemistry with each other. She comes off as charmless and abrasive. And he comes off as a fish out of water. The story isn't involving. The dating app premise is too ridiculous. What high schoolers would pay for dates?
Don't bother with this one.
Bad in every way
Almost every aspect of this movie is bad. From the cast dialogue acting and inappropriate music. Judd Nelson and C Thomas Howell are the only famous names and it's sad the way they deliver the dialogue about battle. Instead of showing the battles they just talk about most of them. All the action is some bad air combat and one torpedo drop. We've seen this floating in the sea thing before but this one is like watching paint dry. To crown it all the twist ending is so irritating. If they want to show that there are not many happy endings in war, making us sit through 90 minutes of this deserves a big fat zero.
Can You Keep a Secret? (2019)
Alexandra is sweet enough. But she is given too much dialogue. Tyler looks a bit fierce for romantic comedies.
The little message about openness and being yourself isn't enough for a movie. Not one of the better ones.
Hotel Mumbai (2018)
A timely reminder and a well directed movie
This is a clearly told and very scary movie about the Mumbai terror attacks. It's so much more effective than a typical thriller because it's a true story. There is no Bruce Willis type hero to burst in and rescue everyone. It was a tragic end for so many. The heroes are everyday hotel staff like the one played by Patel and under equipped policemen. Sometimes you wonder if Armie Hammer's character's foolhardiness was just a fictional composite to show different events and places in the hotel. The best point is how well directed the movie is. Everything that happens is clear and even the Pakistani terrorists are distinguishable. Often thriller action movies can be confusing.
There have not been many movies about terror attacks of recent years. It isn't exploitative it's a reminder of the threats innocent people all over the world face from terror.
The Cheerleader Murders (2016)
Quite a high body count for Lifetime
A girl believes she is cursed because her sister and father were killed by her sister's ex boyfriend. Years later her cheerleading freinds are snatched and one is murdered. There is quite a lot of violence for Lifetime. It's fairly invovling to see who the murderer is. The actress is alright.
Ok for one watch.
Tall Girl (2019)
I agree with the premise - it's hard to be over 6 feet for a girl. It's quite interesting at first to watch the mild bullying. But is it that rough in real life? There are tall guys in every school. Where is the basketball team in this school? Anyway dancer Ava Michelle is quite pretty. There are some laughs along the way and it's quite cute. In comes a Swedish exchange student Stig played by Luke Eisner. They seem to hit it off well. They both like musicals. And he is nice and isn't relatively handsome in his own school. This is funny I guess, and it is a sad fact that Europeans are generally accepted to be better looking on average. Less sugar in the diet? Everything is average teen comedy with some dialog that could have been written in a more witty style until the ending which doesn't feel right. The much shorter guy is a good friend but sticking up for her doesn't make romantic chemistry. That is what a good friend would do. I was still rooting for the tall pair to make it. This movie's message isn't convincing.
Good Sam (2019)
Good points: The Politician making use of the donations to further his campaign. The story is fairly interesting. You want to see how things turn out.
Bad points: There isn't too much chemistry between the lead actors. Not convincing why he didn't just give the money directly to the people he wanted to. As if they wouldn't accept a gift.
Nosy neighbours suspect abuse and worse. And they are dumb. The Central characters are annoying busy bodies. The ending doesn't explain enough of the loose ends meant to throw you off. Waste of time and not well written.
The Reckoning (2015)
For the sake of completeness you want to see how things end in this trilogy. The storylines come to a close and it's satisfying to watch. Katie LeClerc is still very watchable. Some of the other cast have changed. In some ways it's the weakest of the three. There still are Amish vs non Amish contrasts.
A few weak points. A rather tiresome triangle between her Englisher fiancé and her Amish old flame. Why did they choose such a sketchy looking guy to play the Amish guy? Her orphanage project isn't that interesting.
The Confession (2013)
Welcome to the world of Englishers
This is quite an engrossing soap opera with an Amish element the second in the trilogy. Katie LeClerc takes over from Danielle Pannabaker. She goes to find her birth Mom. But the nefarious Husband of her birth mother gets an imposter to pretend to be her to get the money. Poor thing. But this well plotted story has a solution that is logical and feel good. Worth watching.
The Shunning (2011)
Only part 1 of a trilogy but promising
Fairly engrossing story about an Amish girl played by Danielle Pannabaker who finds out she is adopted. She is actually an Englisher. No one wonder she likes pop songs! after she backs out of marrying a widower she is shunned. Sounds medieval. Anyway she decides to go out to look for Mom. Then just when things are getting interesting it ends.
Just love the Amish.
Double Wedding (2010)
The premise isn't that likely - a man ends up dating twins. Seems silly and it feels fake. The cast is pleasant but the story doesn't work.
Most fun movie of 2019!
Delightfully funny and well written story. From the beginning it gets your sympathy. When Wall Street suffers, it trickles down, all the way down! The effect of the 2008 financial crisis on lap dancers is hilarious and rings very true. Jennifer Lopez looks and dances terrifically and not just for her age. She acts well too just hard nosed enough yet likable. Lili Reinhart of Riverdale and Cardi B are good supporting cast. Constance Wu shows she can do something really different from Crazy Rich Asians. She is sweet and a sympathetic central character. Love the score - a highly original use of Chopin Etudes as a soundtrack. It's quite a feel good story for a crime story. Bit of a Pretty Woman / Mayflower Madam vibe. Of course they do show when they cross the line it is wrong. Wall Street hot shots can be victims too!
Hilarious and touching from beginning to end. Better than those done to death crime heist caper movies.
