For those of us who haven't read the book
I am a huge Stephen King fan. I have read many of his greats, but not everything he has written. Dreamcatcher is one that I have not read. Therefore, please be aware that my opinions are based solely upon the screenplay version of the story.
Basically I really liked it. I was really surprised, as I didn't know much about the movie. I saw the preview and then went to the movie. I personally truly enjoy the movie experience when you go in kind of unprepared.
The movie made good use of visual effects and sounds. Some of the terminology also really brought me into the story. The cast is great, with some well-known faces and some new faces as well.
I would directly compare this movie with few others, as it incorporated elements of many others. Stephen King included the usual Maine environment he knows so well and used it to its fullest.
It kept me interested, and trying to figure out what would happen next. I gave it a 10 because it was really interesting and I would be willing to see it again soon (while its still in the movie theater) to get all of the details. I rarely see a movie I'm willing to watch again while it's in the theater.
I recommend this movie and would suggest reserving judgment on its weaknesses for the strengths it displays. Overall it was a great movie experience, and I'd recommend it to Stephen King fans or anyone else, alike.
I do plan to read the book, but that's another review altogether. :)
The Scorpion King (2002)
WISIWUG! "what you see is what you get"
Overall, I would say that this movie is worthy of a trip to the big screen. I would definitely qualify this with an "...if you like action flicks." Michael Clarke Duncan is a nice addition to the cast, as I know him from movies like The Green Mile and The Whole Nine Yards (two great movies, both with excellent performances on his part). Kelly Hu did well on her role as well, and is a very fine looking woman to boot. I am unfamiliar with Steven Brand but he performed pretty well as the villain.
The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) was everything I expected: Big, menacing, cocky, and funny. He definitely kicked some butt. The one-liners were very modern and some of the scenarios in the movie were pretty far fetched (like the "Chinese recipe") but added to the action factor. As I said, WISIWUG.
In conclusion, I would say that it could have been a better movie for me personally if they had tied in the storyline from "The Mummy Returns". But then again if you had not seen that movie I would guess that it probably wouldn't hurt not knowing the Scorpion King's fate.
I would recommend that you go see this movie if you like action. Don't expect a great plotline - it has an average one, at best. Good stunts and a fairly neat concept, but it could have been better in my opinion. I gave it a "6" out of ten, although a 6.5 was my actual comment on the way out of the movie theater - but isn't an option at the IMDB so I rounded down out of fairness to all the "7" movies out there.
CRAP. Total unbelievable absolute CRAP.
Shoot yourself in the foot. This would be better than watching ZOOLANDER. Better yet, pay someone $3.95 to do it. Or burn the money, that's still good because you can enjoy the few seconds of flame. But do not watch this. It will devour your soul. It is a movie that makes me want to puke until I am dead.
Seriously though this movie lacked a few things. While having plenty of cameos and famous people it did not have any of the following:
1. Funny Things 2. A Plot Line 3. Anything that made sense 4. Understandable lines 5. A reason to exist
Save yourself now. Run. Before its too late.
