Battlestar Galactica (2004–2009)
A Bad Show
7 April 2008
Warning: Spoilers
It's as simple as it gets.

Battlestar Galactica is just a bad show.

It fails in what it is trying to do. And it fails on its own terms.

The fact that it's a remake makes it all the more annoying because they had a model to emulate and, possibly, do better. But Ron Moore and his team decided to re-invent the wheel.

It turns out they're not that good at re-inventing.

I think a lot of the trouble that befell Galactica came from the fateful decision to shoot on video.

Once that decision was made, the shaking of the camera and the dreadful, dull look of the show were corollaries as you have to spend a lot more time to light video if you want it to look half as good as film.

That still doesn't excuse the pretentious scripts and the bad young models cast where actors were necessary.

In short, the new Battlestar Galactica has been a dreadfully bad show that has been an albatross around the neck of SciFi Channel.

No Reality Here, Just Pretension
15 April 2006
What a bad, bad film!!! I can't believe all the hype that has been lavished on this pretentious, amateurish excuse for a real movie!! I left the theater before the end, stunned by how bad the direction and camera-work of that movie were!! And to read adoring paeans that claim there is truth and reality in this film when all it is in reality is a brazen attempt at pulling the wool over the eyes of reviewers and festivals by being cheap and tawdry.

At least this film showed me once and for all that the Sundance Festival has become a complete joke and that being shown here is more a label of bad film-making than anything else.

Avoid at all costs. You'll want your time back! I know I did.

Veronica Mars (2004– )
Part of the Hype Over Substance style of TV shows
15 April 2006
Like its brethren in hype Arrested Development, Battlestar Galactica and The Shield, Veronica Mars will very likely only be remembered for the amount of hype that was lavished on the show.

Like all the shows above, Veronica Mars is low-rated (it usually overs below the Top 100 shows on TV!) but gets huge amounts of press and buys itself awards and kudos.

And again, like the above shows, Veronica Mars has been renewed in spite of its status as a money loser.

It's a sad thing that so much effort and money is spent today to prop up shows that can't attract an audience (Veronica Mars has been sampled by a lot of people and rejected).

Maybe it will also be a footnote in the career of Kristen Bell, if she can select good projects in the future and capitalize on the hype.
