East Germany, 1989. Twelve-year-old Fritzi lovingly takes care of her best friend Sophie's little dog Sputnik, while Sophie's family is on summer vacation in Hungary. When Sophie doesn't come back from vacation, Fritzi and Sputnik set out in search of her. Historically accurate, authentic and with lots of rich period detail and atmosphere, this moving animated film for the whole family retells the story of the peaceful revolution of 1989 from a child's perspective. An entertaining and exciting tale of the Fall of the Wall, and of the people who were brave enough to change the world, which will make a lasting impression, not only on young viewers. Well told story for young children
13 October 2019 | by niehoffnilsSee all my reviews

I have seen this movie with my 8 year old daughters. It tells a story about friendships which knows no obstacles. Fritzi is a twelve year old girl, living in eastern germany in autumn 1989. Her best friend leaves to hungary for a vacation, not knowing that her mother tries to escape to western germany. On her way to get her best friends dog, which she takes care of during her hungary "vacation", back to her best friend, she meets friends, meets the state security service and finally takes part in the peaceful demonstrations in Leipzig.

The story is well suited for young children of 6 or older, which maybe had already contact with this part of history (for e.g. we live about 5km from the old border between the two germanys). Even if you do not know this part of history, it is a good movie which shows the fear and the inexperience of adults and children in east germany, just weeks before the wall fell. Be sure, your kids will ask you about more informations about this historical topic after watching the movie.

A clear 10/10 for me.
