De-Aging for TV: VFX Helped John Goodman Lose Decades in 'The Righteous Gemstones'

De-Aging for TV: VFX Helped John Goodman Lose Decades in 'The Righteous Gemstones'
The notion of de-aging an actor with digital techniques — for instance, Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino in Netflix's upcoming The Irishman — has been a big topic in the motion picture business. But is it also a technique that can be applied to TV schedules and budgets?

De-aging techniques vary greatly, as do the budgets. The most sophisticated methods involve the creation of a fully digital human, as seen in The Irishman as well as to create a fully digital Will Smith in Gemini Man. Marvel has applied other techniques to de-age the likes of Robert Downey Jr.'s ...

'Righteous Gemstones' Breakout Opens Up About His Lovable Ex-Satanist

[This contains spoilers for the season of HBO's Righteous Gemstones, including the finale.]

Keefe Chambers — the gentle, soft-spoken, reformed Satanist in Danny McBride's HBO megachurch comedy The Righteous Gemstones, which wrapped its first season on Sunday night — likes to have a soak and turn it up real hot. Which is fitting, because the actor who plays him, Tony Cavalero, is about to get real hot, too.

The audience is introduced to Keefe early on in the pilot. When Adam Devine's Kelvin — the youngest of the three Gemstone siblings — walks into his living room after returning ...

The Righteous Gemstones Episode 9

After an incredibly fun, strong first season that gave us such delights as Walton Goggins’ portrayal of Uncle Baby Billy, an earworm like “Misbehavin’,” and a new oddball Edi Patterson character, it’s heartening to see The Righteous Gemstones absolutely stick the landing with the season finale. If we didn’t know the show had already been picked up for a second season, “Better Is the End of a Thing Than Its Beginning” could even serve as a series finale; the episode wraps up virtually all of the season’s stories in a tidy bow. Still, “Better Is the End of a Thing Than Its Beginning” isn’t just a dutiful tying of loose ends, as it may be the season’s funniest,

‘Jexi’ Film Review: Comedy Crashes in Witless Tale of Runaway Operating System

‘Jexi’ Film Review: Comedy Crashes in Witless Tale of Runaway Operating System
If, for whatever reason, you’re determined to see “Jexi,” you’ll want to arrive with a backup plan. Life is busy, so it’s important to use our time wisely. Perhaps you can mentally balance your checkbook, think through your upcoming schedule, or finally memorize the alphabet backwards. I came up with a long list of all the worthy filmmakers who’ve been unable to make a second movie, or had to struggle for years just to get their first one onscreen.

Although this wasteful effort from the “Bad Moms” team is uninspired in almost every regard, it does advance cinema in a single way: writers-directors Jon Lucas and Scott Moore have figured out how to modernize one of the most traditional and apparently still essential Hollywood tropes: the Crazy Bitch. They’ve even managed to cut out the middle(wo)man, no longer requiring the services of a

El Camino: Breaking Bad Easter Eggs and Reference Guide

Alec Bojalad Oct 14, 2019

As the first (and maybe only) ever Breaking Bad movie, El Camino features plenty of Easter eggs and references from the classic series.

Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan faced an interesting challenge with the first Breaking Bad movie, El Camino.

On the one hand, he had to develop a self-contained story that would appeal to millions of Netflix subscribers scrolling through their accounts and seeing a movie with a weird Spanish car name. On the other hand, however, he knew he had to satisfying the legion of Breaking Bad fans, looking to return to the world of Breaking Bad for the first time since 2013 (save for the Better Call Saul prequel years of course).

‘Succession’: For the Love of ‘L to the O-g,’ This Brilliant HBO Series Is a Comedy

‘Succession’: For the Love of ‘L to the O-g,’ This Brilliant HBO Series Is a Comedy
Maybe it’s because of its Emmy categorization in drama, but recently, there’s been a lot of discussion about “Succession” as though it’s not intentionally funny; as though the idea that it could be looked at as a comedy — albeit, a dementedly dark comedy — is preposterous. It tends to end up being compared to very clear-cut comedies, especially its cable network-mate, the terrific “The Righteous Gemstones,” in a way that describes those series as “the funny version of ‘Succession'”… as though “Succession” itself isn’t inherently the funny version of “Succession.”

“Succession” has always been a dark comedy masquerading as a prestige drama. HBO’s hourlong critical darling honestly has more in common with “Fleabag” or “Flowers” than it does “Ozark.” But that’s also because it’s specifically a dark British comedy conveniently masquerading as an American prestige drama.

Succession is just Arrested Development minus jokes.

The Righteous Gemstones Episode 8 Review: But the Righteous Will See Their Fall

The Righteous Gemstones Episode 8

Though every episode title for The Righteous Gemstones’ first season has foreshadowed the events within using an appropriate biblical verse, perhaps none is more befittingly on the nose than “But the Righteous Will See Their Fall.” The penultimate episode of this stellar first season, “But the Righteous Will See Their Fall” is a dark installment for pretty much every character. The storm caused by Scotty and his robbery rains down hard on all of the Gemstones and proves that the foundations of this powerful family were greatly weakened by the loss of Aimee-Leigh and only waiting for one turbulent event to send the whole clan crumbling.

Well, I guess things aren’t exactly bad for everyone. Everyone’s favorite supporting character, Baby Billy,

‘The Righteous Gemstones’: Edi Patterson, Jody Hill, and David Gordon Green on the HBO Series

From creator/executive producer/writer/director Danny McBride, executive producer/director Jody Hill and executive producer/director David Gordon Green, the HBO comedy series The Righteous Gemstones (already picked up for a second season) tells the story of a world-famous televangelist family that has as much of a tradition with greed and deviance as they do with charitable work. And with blackmailers seeking to sully the reputation of eldest son Jesse Gemstone (McBride), patriarch Eli’s (John Goodman) plans to expand the family’s empire could be in jeopardy. While at the HBO portion of the Television Critics Association …

This Righteous Gemstones review contains spoilers.

The Righteous Gemstones Episode 7

Though I was raised Catholic, my family and I are what you would call Rabbit and Reindeer Catholics, in that we really only attend church, outside of weddings and funerals, on Easter and Christmas. The local Catholic church in my hometown gets so busy on Easter Sunday that they have to hold a separate service in the adjacent gymnasium just to fit all of the fair-weather worshippers. For those that have made religion their business, Easter is the biggest day of the year, a sort of “season finale,” the moment every other Sunday service has been leading up to. Though this Easter-set episode isn’t the season finale of The Righteous Gemstones, it still carries the same sense of scale and importance.

‘The Unicorn’ Review: CBS Snags a Magic Cast for a Sitcom That’s Ready to Fly
If you miss having a steady influx of mid-budget family comedies in the multiplex, consider “The Unicorn” an instant fix to your absent “Instant Family.” Like “Single Parents” on ABC, the new CBS sitcom starring Walton Goggins aims for the heart of modern, middle-aged parents — not the same folks who fall for the CBS brand of fast-food shows like “Man with a Plan” and “Bob Hearts Abishola,” but the ones who want to believe their comfort food is still good for them. With a stylish setting, a stellar cast, and a premiere episode that respects its central character, “The Unicorn” is just the type of series that’ll make parents happy they don’t have to drive to the theater for their dinner-and-a-show date night.

Wade (Goggins) has been going, going, going since his wife died a year ago. With two little girls to raise, a mortgage to pay, and a demanding job in contracting,
