Episode 2
7 January 2019 | by Prismark10See all my reviews

Javert is the news inspector of a district and he encounters an old friend. Valjean who has now prospered, taken another identity and become mayor of the town.

Javert knows who he really is. Javert knows that Valjean stole money from a boy some years ago and this means life imprisonment in his unbending brand of justice.

Both West and Oyelowo do not overplay their parts. It is as they dance around each other, playing cat and mouse.

The main story is the descent of Fantine and Valjean plays a cruel hand in her fate.

Fantine leaves her child in the care of the grasping, immoral Madame Thenardier and her husband who we saw in the opening of the first episode.

Fantine loses her job in Valjean's factory because of a cruel, vindictive supervisor. Soon she loses her hair and teeth as well. Fantine is forced into prostitution where Javert encounters her and wants to put her in jail for six months.

It certainly was a misery fest.
