Louis Koo Keeps It Low Key

Louis Koo Keeps It Low Key
After Louis Koo, Hong Kong A-list actor and producer, presented Anthony Wong with the best actor award at this year’s Hong Kong Film Awards, he smiled awkwardly as Wong referred to him in his acceptance speech as “movie mogul of the new generation.” But as Wong continued to sing Koo’s praises, the handsome actor jumped in, telling Wong to stop talking about him.

In public, Koo maintains the image of a star, appearing in blockbusters such as action-thriller “Paradox,” which won him best actor awards at both Hong Kong Film Awards and Asian Film Awards last year. His pretty face is often attached to commercial and lifestyle products as their brand ambassadors.

But behind the scenes, the 48-year-old has quietly assumed a role as one the key driving forces behind Hong Kong cinema. One Cool Film Production, which he founded in 2013, has produced a slate of commercial hits

Sf Played Prime Role in Evolution of Scandinavian Cinema Over 100 Years

  • Variety
Sf’s logo is one every Scandinavian is familiar with. A film production company, distributor and the owner of a movie theater chain across the Nordic and Baltic countries until recently, it is a cultural landmark not only in its native Sweden, but also across the Nordic countries.

Founded as Svensk Filmindustri in 1919, Sf played an instrumental role in what is known as the golden age of Swedish cinema. Ambitious productions by directors including Victor Sjöström and Mauritz Stiller, based on famous Nordic literary works, attracted international attention.

After a lull in the 1930s, Swedish cinema enjoyed a revival in the 1940s, partly thanks to the appointment of Sjöström, who had returned to Sweden after working in Hollywood, as artistic director of Sf. As the producer of most Ingmar Bergman films as well as the Astrid Lindgren adaptations, which remain hugely popular across Scandinavia to this day, Sf was firmly

Swedish Major Sf Brings Fresh Ideas Into Its Next Century

  • Variety
Sf Studios — the Swedish major that’s turning 100 this year — is banking on the production of high-concept, talent driven English-language and local films, as well as TV series, to become a key European player and thrive in today’s ultra-competitive landscape increasingly dominated by deep-pocketed Ott services.

Once the home of Ingmar Bergman, Sf Studios has in recent years shifted its core model from being almost fully dedicated to distribution to becoming a prolific producer of premium films and TV shows aimed at the international market.

“Our goal is to be the leading studio in the Nordics and a leading studio in Europe, which means that across both TV and film we develop, finance, produce, distribute film in the Nordics and manage international sales,” says Sf Studios’ CEO Michael Porseryd, who’s been spearheading the strategic shift.

To meet that challenge, Sf Studios has significantly increased its production from two

Sun Entertainment Makes English-Language Debut, Backs Philip Lee’s $120 Million ‘Inversion’

  • Variety
The $120 million multinational disaster movie “Inversion” leads a slate of two feature films and a TV series from Hong Kong-Chinese producer and financier Sun Entertainment Culture (Sunec). The two movies mark Sun’s English-language film debut.

Founded in 2011, Sunec has been involved in Hong Kong-Chinese co-productions such as 2017’s “Paradox” and 2015’s “Spl II: A Time for Consequences,” starring Wu Jing. But with the Chinese entertainment industry currently in turmoil after new tax rules have created hurdles for local financing and production, the company is looking to move in a more international direction, expanding into producing content in different languages as it becomes more difficult to produce in the mainland.

Disaster thriller “Inversion” tells the story of a Chinese scientist and an American pilot who must work together to save the world when gravity suddenly disappears. The project originally was set to be written by a team comprised of screenwriter,

Video Game Review – Stellaris: Console Edition

Andy Naylor reviews Stellaris: Console Edition…

Since I made the full-time switch from PC gaming to console gaming around 15 years ago there is only one genre that I have truly missed, that has never translated as well without the use of a mouse and keyboard, that has never truly grasped the console world; strategy games. Those that have made the crossover have been mediocre at best and soon become tiresome to play, but despite this I was excited about the release of Stellaris: Console Edition. I’d be vaguely aware of its existence, but as with anything only PC based I ignored it with petty jealousy aimed solely at my PC brothers and sisters. Xbox One and PS4 are getting, not just a strategy game, but a Grand Strategy game!

Comparisons are always going to be made to the best known strategy game, Civilization VI, and they do have some similarities,

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa on the ‘Paradox’ of ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’

  • Variety
Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa on the ‘Paradox’ of ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’
Riverdale” showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is expanding his hold on the high school drama genre, and the small screen adaptation of classic Archie Comics characters, with “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” for Netflix. “I’ve always loved coming-of-age stories, they’re some of my favorite stories,” he says. In splitting his time between both shows, he is launching the first season of “Sabrina” while constantly looking to find new ways to make the third season of “Riverdale” feel “as fresh and exciting” as a first season show.

What was the entry point for you with adapting “Sabrina”?

The entry point for me was the coming-of-age story. And I love horror — I love the genre. And I love the Archie Comic characters. So this felt like it was a confluence of a bunch of stuff. A lot of horror is set during or tied to coming-of-age — “Carrie” is the best example: Her telekinesis manifests when she hits puberty.
