When asked in an interview at a convention, whether he believed in Bigfoot or not, lead actor Sam Elliot replied that he has "never seen him," but that the idea of Bigfoot really existing was "fantastic" and he would be open to believing in his existence should proof of it be shown.

The trivia item below may give away important plot points.

The stone in the shoe was Hitler/Bigfoot. Bigfoot was an analogy for Hitler in that nothing was gained by killing Hitler because the nazi ideal (disease) continued to spread (hence his regret) BUT in killing Bigfoot, he halted the spread of the disease, saving millions.
