Have you watched The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance yet? If not, what are you waiting for!? This is an incredibly well-made series that tells an incredibly epic story. If you can’t tell, I loved it.

If you have watched the series and you enjoyed the Muppet puppetry work that was created and performed by the creative team at The Jim Henson Company, I have featurette here from Deep Cuts that you’ll appreciate as it explores the evolution of the work of The Jim Henson Company and The Dark Crystal as they brought the fantasy world back to life for Age of Resistance. We even get to see some early 2016 CGI animated tests that were done when they were exploring that route. In the end, I’m glad they went the way of the Muppets.

Sci Fi Fidelity Podcast - The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance

Michael Ahr Dave Vitagliano Sep 15, 2019

Our genre television podcast hosts analyze the epic fantasy and puppetry tour de force The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance on Netflix.

Even though we’ve covered plenty of science fiction, fantasy, supernatural, and horror shows on Sci Fi Fidelity, we’ve never reviewed anything quite like The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. Billed as a prequel to Jim Henson’s 1982 film The Dark Crystal, the Netflix series wowed us with its artistry, its worldbuilding, and its impressive slate of voice talent. Although there is some debate in the podcast about the appeal of puppet-based storytelling, there was no doubt about its compelling mythology and enjoyable characters.

As usual, the podcast centers around the first two episodes of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance with a “spoiler zone” towards the end of the discussion for those who have seen the whole thing. This allows for

‘The Dark Crystal’: Nathalie Emmanuel and Beccy Henderson Break Down Playing Deet’s Two Voices

‘The Dark Crystal’: Nathalie Emmanuel and Beccy Henderson Break Down Playing Deet’s Two Voices
[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.”]

Viewers of “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” on Netflix will notice that for each puppet character, usually two performers are credited. One is the more well-known celebrity name such as Bill Hader, Awkwafina, or Lena Headey, whilel the other is a name that’s probably not as familiar outside of puppeteering circles. IndieWire spoke to “Game of Thrones” alum Nathalie Emmanuel and puppeteer/actress Beccy Henderson to understand the contributions of each performer to the Gelfling known as Deet.

In “Age of Resistance,” Deet is Gelfling of the Grottan clan who lives underground in caves and cares for animals. She learns of a sickness in the Crystal of Truth called the Darkening that is infecting all the living things in Thra, and she sets out to put a stop to its source: the Skeksis. To play the cute but heroic Gelfling, casting went with a relatively unknown puppeteer.

‘The Dark Crystal’: The Puppet Wizardry Behind the Most Hilarious Parts of ‘Age of Resistance’

‘The Dark Crystal’: The Puppet Wizardry Behind the Most Hilarious Parts of ‘Age of Resistance’
According to “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” making-of documentary, Netflix’s prequel series first tested a version using computer graphics to create the characters, but ultimately decided that puppets were the best choice. And thank goodness for that. The use of puppetry creates a visual continuity with the original 1982 Jim Henson film and makes the performances far more compelling and immediate than CGI would. Plus, puppets are just goddamn funny.

Co-creators Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews wanted to make a TV show for everybody, and that meant offsetting the grimmer aspects of “Dark Crystal” with some levity. In the series, the creepy Skeksis reign over the Gelfling and are extending their own life by sucking the essence from their subjects. As a backdrop to the story of the Gelfling uprising is the entire planet of Thra, a world teeming with imaginative creatures and plants, all realized through puppetry. Of

Jason Isaacs Opens Up About the End of The Oa and How He Was Preparing for the Third Season

We (fans) are still reeling from the loss of the incredible series The Oa. I often said it was the most original series I had ever seen, and I loved the characters dearly. I was so surprised by every twist and turn, and relished the completely new world the story thrust its characters into at the start of the second season, then again in the final moments of the second season. I couldn’t wait to see what this fall down the rabbit hole would bring to the story. But the five season plan was all cut off prematurely when The Oa was suddenly canceled by Netflix. Fans were outraged. The creators, Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, were rumored to possibly get movie deal, but Marling stated there was no way the story could be finalized in a two hour film. I totally get that, but I’m just so bummed.

‘The Dark Crystal’: Inside That Magnificent, Political Gelfling Makeover

‘The Dark Crystal’: Inside That Magnificent, Political Gelfling Makeover
[Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” Episodes 6 and 8.]

“She looks like a Skeksis!”

On a crazy show like “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” where the ruling Skeksis are literally draining the life force of their Gelfling constituents, one of the most shocking moments isn’t violent at all, but involves a head-to-toe makeover. With a struggle for the Gelfling crown at stake, Princess Seladon shows up in the throne room wearing a costume that makes her look like a mini Skeksis. She’s both menacing and magnificent, but most importantly, she makes her political stance abundantly clear; she sides with the Skeksis.

Seladon, the eldest daughter of the All-Maudra Gelfling leader, was first mentioned in the “Dark Crystal” novels by J.M Lee, and was only going to have a small appearance in the first episode of the Netflix series. But director and executive producer Louis Leterrier felt that

‘The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance’ Characters, Ranked

Major spoilers ahead for Netflix's The Dark Crystal and The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. By now, hopefully you've watched the new prequel series to The Dark Crystal. We have. A bunch of times. And we're borderline obsessed. So we've put together a character ranking that sums up just how useful (or deliciously deceitful) each of the characters was in these 10 episodes. Hopefully there are more coming in the near future, but this should suffice for starters. We toyed with the idea of doing one big ranking from The Worst of the Worst (which would …

Critics Pick Their Favorite Puppet TV Characters of All Time

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday.

This week’s question: What’s your favorite puppet character on TV of all time? Why?

Allison Keene (@KeeneTV), Paste Magazine

Given my lifelong love of Henson productions, most especially the Muppets (and all related movies), it’s no surprise that I’ve become fully obsessed with “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.” But to pick a favorite puppet? It’s nearly impossible. I have to pick two. Ok, three. It’s important that they’re all represented!

For one: Deet, a Gelfling. The heart and soul of the series, so sweet, so cute. One of the series’ writers revealed recently that Deet is based off of the way his girlfriend talks about horses. It fits; Deet is pure goodness and joy, but she’s also strong and brave. Two: Hup, the

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is set as a prequel to the 1982 movie The Dark Crystal, a dark fantasy that focused on a magical being trying to restore peace and balance to his world by returning a lost fragment of a powerful gemstone. Lisa Henson believes her father would be “really happy” with The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance

In 1982, Jim Henson released the puppet animated dark fantasy adventure movie, The Dark Crystal. The film revolved around a group of Gelfling on a journey to restore balance to their world, Thra, by restoring a powerful broken crystal currently under control by the evil Skeksis.

Unfortunately, Henson never had the chance to further explore the world of Thra and expand on the lore as he passed away in 1990. However, Netflix has recently released The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, a prequel series that explores a previous time in Thra’s history – which both critics and fans are praising.

Now, according to Jim Henson’s daughter, Lisa Henson, she believes her father would have approved of the prequel series. In a recent interview with Yahoo, Lisa stated that she feels confident that Jim would have liked what the show has achieved:

“I feel confident that he would like it and be really happy,
