Starring Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin, Adrift is based on the inspiring true story of two free spirits whose chance encounter leads them first to love, and then to the adventure of a lifetime. As the two avid sailors set out on a journey across the ocean, Tami Oldham (Woodley) and Richard Sharp (Claflin) couldn't anticipate they would be sailing directly into one of the most catastrophic hurricanes in recorded history. In the aftermath of the storm, Tami awakens to find Richard badly injured and their boat in ruins. With no hope for rescue, Tami must find the strength and determination to save herself and the only man she has ever loved. Adrift is the unforgettable story about the resilience of the human spirit and the transcendent power of love.Written by
In reality, Richard and Tami met in San Diego, not Tahiti. Richard was sailing around the world with an English girlfriend, who he ditched in favor of Tami. It's true that Tami had been a cook aboard a tall ship. See more »
During a scene when Tami and Richard are watching a sunset, Tami references Bob Ross when poking fun at Richard. However given her time traveling overseas from 78-83 this couldn't have been a pop reference she knew. See Bob Ross's Joy of Painting was in production from 1983-1994, Season 1 ran from Jan 11th - Mar 29th 1983 and Season 2 ran from Aug 31st - Nov 23 1983. The first season of The Joy of Painting aired on many PBS stations across the east coast, but the audience was small. It ended up moving to a new home on public television. This time, at WIPB in Muncie, Indiana. Their initial trip would take them back to her home in San Diego and be home by October. Given these factors it's highly unlikely anyone on that side of the world would have heard of a new (low viewership) show that was Broadcast by non-commercial public television stations. See more »
Well, maybe I lack sophistication, but I thought it was a beautiful story and movie. The way it was interwoven with flashbacks and the present and engineered with dramatic and unforeseen elements really made it quite compelling. It demonstrated the depths of love in a very effective way that stayed with me long after it was over.
