Sanjay Leela Bhansali was attacked in Jaigarh fort in Jaipur while shooting for the film by Rajput Karni Sena who also vandalized the set.They attackers claimed that character of Maharani Padmini whose has done lots for their community is shown having romantic angle with Allauddin Khilji.Many big names from Film industry came in support of Sanjay Leela Bhansali after this attack.While shooting for the film in Kolhapur in March 2017 the crew was again attacked and the sets were vandalized.People armed with petrol bombs, stones and Lathis charged and set the set ablaze, injuring animals and destroying several costumes.
Ranveer Singh locked himself in his apartment for 21 days to get into the character of Alauddin Khilji.
The title was changed from Padmavati, named after the historical/fictional character, to Padmaavat, a poem written by Malik Muhammad Jayasi, based on which the film has been made. The change of name came after huge protests from the Rajput communities objecting over the alleged distortion of history done by the makers which demeans Rani Padmavati. It was the Censor Board who suggested the change to signify that the film is a work of fiction.

To blend the different scores of Rajputs and Khilji into one, Balhara used European classical instruments like strings section and brass section.
To represent the Khilji's culture, Balhara recorded folk instruments from Turkey, Iran and Afghanistan , especially use of the Zurna .
On recording the traditional instruments, the composer Sanchit Balhara used a lot of Sindhi sarangi, Alghoza, Murchang, Rajasthani Dhol, Murali, Narh and folk chants, which were used for scenes portraying the Rajputs in the film.
Sanchit Balhara, who composed the film score, stated that he got into acquaintance with Rajasthani scholars and learned how the Khiljis traveled from Rann to Afghanistan and eventually settled in Delhi. Thus, his musical preparation revolved around that era.
While recording the romantic track "Nainowale Ne", Bhansali briefed Neeti Mohan that the melody should have an old world charm but blend of contemporary and modern.
Lyricist A. M. Turaz, on his track "Ek Dil, Ek Jaan" centred the lyrics of the song one the line "Mohabbat Ke Bina Koi Tarraki Mumkin Nahi Hai" which translates in English to: "Without Love, No Success is Possible". He was quoted saying: "I tried to write love in this song. Rani Padmavati loved her husband a lot and that's what I tried to showcase in the song."
"Ghoomar" was written 2-3 times as the lyricist wanted to tell a story through the song.
A. M. Turaz, the lyricist of "Ghoomar" stated that he had picked up some words from the people of Rajasthan when he had been there for music research . He was quoted saying, "The traditional Ghoomar is basically to showcase happiness. Rajasthani women used to do ghoomar when they were happy."
Bhansali, in an interview with The Times of India stated: "Ghoomar is the glory of Rajasthan and the folk music." He wanted to revive the music and dance form of ghoomar . Bhansali wanted to make the audience understand the "taal", "laya", rhythm pattern and associated dance form through the song "Ghoomar".
Songs "Ghoomar" and "Binte Dil" received positive critical acclaim for both composition and picturisation by overseas as well as Indian music critics.
Critics opined the tracks to be distinguishable but identifiable with the composers recent usual style of composition, resembling with his previous work 'Bajirao Mastani', remarkably the track "Khalibali" to "Malhari".
Critics based in India called the soundtrack "shortest music album" by Bhansali and positively anticipated for the tracks to match the visuals on screen.
The original score blends the middle eastern music and Rajasthani folk through brass and string sections of European Classical music.
The soundtrack album incorporates tracks covering the genres notably Rajasthani folk ("Ghoomar", "Holi"), fusion ("Khalibali", "Ek Dil, Ek Jaan") and middle-eastern ("Binte Dil"), all emphasising on rhythmic arrangements.
"Ghoomar" debuted on Mirchi Music Top 20 countdown on 4 November 2018 at 2nd position.
"Ghoomar" garnered more than 10 Million views within 24 hours and gained highest number of views for T-Series in 24 hours.

On 30 December 2017, it was reported that Central Board of Film Certification 's examining committee asked the film's producers to remove the shots from the song 'Ghoomar' revealing Padukone's midriff for a more modest representation of Padmavati.
On 17 January 2018, it was reported that Home Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Bhupendra Singh remarked that the song 'Ghoomar' "should not be played as the release of the film was banned in the state" during the time, which he denied a day later.
On 22 November 2017, an Education Officer in Dewas issued an order prohibiting the use of "Ghoomar" in any school function. However, a day later the district collector ordered the withdrawal of the circular with immediate effect.
In November 2017, protests were held against the song "Ghoomar" claiming that "Rajput queens never danced before anybody".
Upon release, the song "Ghoomar" along with the film became controversial. On Twitter, complaints against the song was echoed, claiming that it portrays the Rajput queen Padmavati in a bad light.
The song 'Ghoomar' was released as "Goomar" in Tamil and "Jhoommani Jhoommani Aade" in Telugu. The Tamil and Telugu versions as well were sung by Ghoshal.
It went on to set a new opening weekend record for a Hindi film in US and Canada with $4.2 million, and witnessed the second best per-theatre-average inside the top 10 with $13,188 from 324 theatres.
In the United States and Canada, the film grossed $1.13 million on its opening day. This was followed by the biggest ever single-day for a Hindi film with $1.8 million on Saturday, breaking the previous record held by "PK" ($1.41 million).
The main reason behind the film's success in Australia was because Paramount was able to secure release in all three major theatre chains ( Hoyts, Event Cinemas and Village Cinemas ) unlike other Bollywood films which have to choose between the two latter.
The film broke all-time opening day records in Australia (A$367,984), surpassing the likes of 'Dangal' (2016) and the dubbed-Hindi version of 'Baahubali: The Conclusion' (2017).
Due to the numerous controversies associated with the film before its release which resulted in banning the film in certain states, the film's commercial performance was highly unpredictable.
The film was released in only 70% of places in India.

Post the CBFC approval with U/A certification, the film got banned by the Chief Ministers of four states Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana in order to maintain 'law and order' and avert protests in their states.
The film makers received support from the film community and industry associations including the Indian Film & Television Directors' Association, Cine & TV Artists Association, Western India Cinematographers' Association, Association of Cine & Television Art Directors & Costume Designers.

In Haryana , the protestors had attacked several vehicles including a school bus.
In the days leading up to the film's release, there were violent protests and riots in several parts of India.
While filming a scene in Masai Plateau, Kolhapur at night in October 2017, some people attacked and set the set ablaze, injuring animals and destroying several costumes.
Shri Rajput Karni Sena had made further threats of violence for both makers and viewers.
Bhansali was assaulted by some Rajput organizations on film's set.
Several Rajput caste organisations including Shri Rajput Karni Sena and its members had protested and later vandalised the film sets claiming that the film portrays Padmavati, a Rajput queen, in bad light.
The complete soundtrack was released by T-Series on January 21, 2018.

The designer duo Rimple and Harpreet Narula elaborated that the costume worn by Padukone in the final scene of the film features the tree-of-life motif and twisted gota embroidery and has a Kota dupatta with block printing.
Delhi-based Rimple and Harpreet Narula designed Rani Padmavati's costume using traditional Gota embroidery work of Rajasthan. The border derives from the architectural details of Rajasthani palace windows and jharokhas and the odhnis have been styled in conventional ways which are still prevalent in the Mewar belt of Rajasthan.
Jim Sarbh learned horse-riding for the role.

In 2008, Bhansali produced an opera version in Paris, inspiring him to begin work on a film version.

In the climax scene Ranveer Singh was so immersed in the role of Allaudin Khilji that he forgot that he was bleeding very badly. Only after the director cut of the scene Ranveer was taken to the hospital and had stitches.

The film shows an unsuccessful assassination plot by Alauddin's nephew, one which seriously injures the Sultan, but none of this actually happened.
Historian Mohammed Safiullah also criticised Khilji's portrayal and the implicit depiction of a homosexual relationship between Khilji and his slave-general Malik Kafur.
Jalaluddin Khilji ascended the throne of Delhi in 1290 only to end the chaos that ensued after the death of Sultan Ghiyas-ud-din Balban. He was not ambitious by nature and did not lead an attack on the Delhi Sultanate from Ghazni, Afghanistan.
In the film, Padmavati travels to Delhi in order to rescue Ratan Singh. While in the poem, it is only Ratan Singh's faithful servants, Gora and Badal who travel to Delhi along with their followers to save Ratan Singh.

The climax of the film shows Ratan Singh being killed by Alauddin Khilji's forces while he is engaged in battle with Khilji and is about to defeat him. While in the poem, he never fought Khilji and died in a battle against King Devpal of Kumbalner before Khilji attacked Chittor.
The film shows Padmavati as the daughter of the king of Singal. While in the poem, Padmavati was the sister of the king and Ratan Singh married her after defeating the king in a game of chess .
In the film, the Brahmin Raghav Chetan is exiled as per Padmavati's wishes. While in the poem, he left Mewar on his own accord, fearing Ratan Singh's rage.
The "Jauhar Theme" gained positive response from viewers in India. It was featured in the trailer and the climax of the film when Jauhar takes place.
