1964. Life post successful "Baby Jane" is not as either Bob, Joan or Bette would have liked or imagined. Agreeing to direct 4 for Texas (1963) to irk Jack and prove him wrong, Bob is now banned from the studio for the movie being a disaster. Joan is now reluctantly on a gimmicky promotional tour for her latest movie, Strait-Jacket (1964), a shlockfest which she agreed to do only because she got no other offers and needs to pay bills. Despite the movie doing decent box office, she realizes the people coming to see the movie are there to see ax murders on screen and not her specifically. And Bette has been relegated to doing television again. Jack is irked, but it's because other studios are cashing in on what he likes to think he created with Baby Jane and which he also likes to think he coined "hagsploitation" films: seeing great actresses in the twilight of their careers in roles where they are placed in mortal danger. He does end up meeting with Bob to try and convince him to reteam... Written by Huggo

Did You Know?

During a script reading Bette Davis refers to Shakespeare's "Titus Andronicus" when she says "he had a woman eat her sons in a pie." Jessica Lange, who portrays Joan Crawford, played that very woman in 'Titus (1999)'. See more »

Although John Waters is a huge fan of William Castle, no attempt was made to make him look like Castle, who had a full head of hair, was much heavier and never wore a mustache. See more »

Feud: Bette and Joan (2017)

Episode 6: Hagsploitation

As episode six starts, director William Castle (John Waters) introduces Joan Crawford (Jessica Lange) for their latest horror movie. With the box office doing good Jack Warner (Stanley Tucci) wants Robert Aldrich (Alfred Molina) to get Joan and Bette (Susan Sarandon) back together for another hag-horror film.

This sixth episode is certainly entertaining but at the same time there's really not too much going on here. We're starting the production of HUSH, HUSH SWEET CHARLOTTE and there are some entertaining and good moments but this is certainly the weakest episode since the first one. The highlight of the film is seeing Crawford struggle with the "shock" business of Castle but at the same time I'm not sure if Waters was the right person for the role as he's more of a distraction than anything else.

With that said, Lange once again gets to shine as the more bitter and dark side of Crawford are coming up including the now somewhat notorious rumor of her stag film. Sarandon is fun in her bit pieces as Davis but the real star of this episode is Molina. He's really doing a great job in the role of Aldrich and I thought he was terrific here and actually stole the episode.

Episode: B+
