Trivia

James Frain (Warwick) previously played Thomas Cromwell in the series The Tudors (2007), which focuses on King Henry VIII, son of Elizabeth and King Henry VII. The Tudors also depicts/dramatizes the fate of some of this miniseries' characters, such as Margaret, Countess of Salisbury. See more »

Anything but "Humble & Penitent"
18 January 2020 | by VikiLaudaSee all my reviews

I really enjoyed this, but you have to divorce your mind fom the Gregory books (very good reads but none the less fiction too) & remind yourself this is mostly historical "fiction" it actually made the series (for me at least) a lot more entertaining....However... The markketing for TWP was absolutely cringe worthy! It was touted as the "Feminist Game of Thrones"....Arrghhhh!!! NOooo! We are talking about some of the most intelligent, powerfull, politically shrewd & highly driven women ever to grace REAL English history. They were not a bunch of whiney violet haired feminists screeching about the patriarchy & toxic masculinity! The marketing tag line was just an insult to these smart amazing women, but still, this is largly fiction so a little poetic license should perhaps be allowed for todays young audience. I would suggest todays young ladies read the real biographys about Elizabeth Woodville, Elizabeth of York & Margaret Beaufort & take lessons from these strong, smart, awesome women.

Anyway the series ticks along nicely & I liked how the character of Elizabeth of York (Jodie Comer) progresses through all the episodes. She starts out as a sulky somewhat spoiled brat who evolves into a steely, cold calculating yet genuine Queen of England, devoted to her husband & would go through hell to protect her family. The character of Henry VII (Jacob Collins-Levy) however was a little odd, almost effeminate in nature, paranoid, who sees traitors in every corner. When the real Henry VII was very much a buisness man king, if albeit a bit miserly, he was however, devoted to Elizabeth and worshipped the ground she walked on. Likewise I found the character of Lady Margaret Pole (Rebecca Benson) equally odd & almost irritating in that she always looks like she will burst into tears at every second. However all these actors gave solid performances with a script that was often quite weak in places.

The episodes set at the court in Burgandy came across as a little disjointed, yet the saving grace here was the lovely Joanne Whally & the sumpious costumes. But the series music I found to be extreamly repetitive & kind of annoying, still this does not spoil, what is a watchable, decent piece of entertainment. Just keep in mind the fictional nature of TWP & simply enjoy it as it stands.
