Jimmy Kimmel appears briefly interviewing President Barack Obama at the beginning of this episode. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson appeared together in the same program before the premiere of the 10th season and starred in an amusing parody of the series in which they finished by making love on a table.

The episode marks the first entry of the franchise to be shot on digital video rather than 35mm film which all prior episodes and both films were shot on, excluding the episode The X-Files: X-Cops (2000) which was shot on videotape to emulate Cops (1989).

This episode's title is the English translation of Karl Ove Knausgaards epic novel series Min Kamp. Suggesting that director and writer Chris Carter might have been pretty into the series when he was writing Scully and Mulder's return.

The last time we saw Mulder and Scully before My Struggle they lived together in clandestinity as they ran away after Mulder was condemned to die in The Truth. After helping the FBI with a case, charges against Mulder were forgiven during the events of I Want to Believe. In the years since then, Scully continued working as a doctor and we don't know what Mulder does to make a living.

The title, My Struggle, is translated into German as Mein Kampf. This was the title of Adolf Hitler's manifesto, written while he was in prison.

In keeping with the original series run's practice of reusing Canadian character actors in multiple unrelated parts, Hiro Kanagawa, who plays Garner, also appeared as Peter Tanaka in The X-Files: Firewalker (1994) and as Dr. Yonechi in The X-Files: Synchrony (1997). Kanagawa's character dies a violent death in each episode: Tanaka is infected by a volcanic spore that shoots a tentacle out of his body; Yonechi is killed by a cryogenic freezing compound; and Garner dies in an explosion set off to hide the evidence of the gravity warp drive craft.

Scully has a date with Tad O'Malley. In the entire series run, she has only been on a date two other times: in The X-Files: The Jersey Devil (1993) from the first season and The X-Files: Never Again (1997) from season 4.

In the episode Redux, Scully discovered that she had the same hybrid cells as found in the ice core that was found next to a supposed alien corpse, and she knew for a long time that they had tested on her during her abduction. So it's remarkable that she is surprised when she finds out that she has alien DNA. In addition, Scully was infected with an alien virus and saved in extremis by Mulder when a creature was about to grow inside her in Fight the Future. So she should have known it for a long time, or at least, suspected it.

Given the excessive length of Mulder and Scully unresolved sexual tension and the way in which it was resolved, or rather suggested but without showing how and when, many fans called the seventh season "the season of the secret sex." Later in season ten, some clues seemed to insinuate that Mulder and Scully could have got married at some time in the preceding years. David Duchovny referred several times to Scully as Mulder's "wife", and there were some pictures in which Scully seemed to wear a ring. Because of this, many fans refer to season ten as "the season of the secret marriage." Chris Carter later denied they were married. Also, Gillian Anderson told David Duchovny twice that "they only lived in sin" and she "thought they were smoking a joint, lying in bed" but not "married married."
