Box Office: ‘Miss Bala’ Misfiring as ‘Glass’ Looks to Three-Peat During Slow Super Bowl Weekend
The third frame of M. Night Shyamalan’s “Glass” should lead a typically slow Super Bowl weekend, with about $9 million at 3,665 North American sites, early estimates showed on Friday.

Universal’s thriller, a sequel to “Unbreakable” and “Split,” will likely finish the frame with about $88 million and three consecutive box office crowns in its first 17 days. Stx’s fourth weekend of “The Upside” looks to beat out Sony’s opening of “Miss Bala” for second place with between $7 million and $8 million at 3,568 venues.

Gina Rodriguez’s “Miss Bala” will take in a meager $6 million at 2,203 venues as the weekend’s only new wide release. Forecasts had estimated that “Miss Bala” would draw between $6 million and $10 million by Sunday. Sony anticipates a debut in the $5 million range.

Box Office: ‘Glass’ Stays Victorious, ‘Kid Who Would Be King,’ ‘Serenity’ Bomb
M. Night Shyamalan’s “Glass” easily maintained its reign in North America, adding $19 million during its second weekend of release for a domestic tally of $73.5 million.

Despite a steep 53% decline, the weekend haul of “Glass” was enough to top box office charts as newcomers “The Kid Who Would Be King” and “Serenity” fell flat.

Working Title and 20th Century Fox’s “The Kid Who Would Be King” earned $7 million when it debuted in 3,531 venues, a potentially disastrous result for a film that cost over $60 million before taking marketing into account. The family friendly film, directed by Joe Cornish, came in at the low end of expectations and opened at No. 4 despite positive reviews.

“Sometimes you make a really good movie and you have trouble connecting with a broad audience,” said Chris Aronson, Fox’s head of domestic distribution. The only competition of the PG front in coming weeks is “The
