Awkwafina Won’t Let Inclusivity Be a Hollywood Trend
Half a lifetime ago, a teenage Nora Lum saw Margaret Cho and felt a spark of hope. Even going to a performing arts high school in Queens, N.Y., didn’t give her much confidence that the music industry would understand her, a restless Asian-American tomboy with equally brash and nervous energy to spare. She even gave herself the name “Awkwafina” to poke fun at her own awkwardness, stemming from the fact that she was never quite sure of her place in the world. Cho, however, made success feel within reach. “She existed at that specific time of my life when I saw no other Asian women, and she was so completely unashamed,” says 30-year-old Awkwafina now. “And I could tell that she suffers from something that I suffer from, which is the impossibility of being anybody else but yourself — and also, not ever wanting to be anyone else.”

Impeachment: American Crime Story to Cover Clinton Scandal, Cast Revealed

Joseph Baxter Aug 7, 2019

American Crime Story Season 3 will focus on the sex-strewn scandal that led to President Bill Clinton’s impeachment.

American Crime Story's third FX anthology iteration will focus on the events pertaining to the U.S. House of Representatives’ October 1998 impeachment of President Bill Clinton for “high crimes and misdemeanors”; a bellwether media moment in which the serious news cycle merged with pop-culture-proliferated tabloid stories.

Bearing the title, Impeachment: American Crime Story, the season – initially planned back in 2017, but temporarily taken off the table – is now set to arrive in September 2020, showcasing the sordid affair through the eyes of Monica Lewinsky, the young former White House intern who bore the brunt of the media’s scorn as one-half of President Clinton’s Oval Office infidelity. Indeed, now over 20 years removed from the news cycle heyday of the scandal, Impeachment will see Lewinsky involved as a producer, telling

‘The Farewell’ Star Awkwafina On Why Hiring Her Is ‘Always a Risk,’ Even In a Changing Hollywood

‘The Farewell’ Star Awkwafina On Why Hiring Her Is ‘Always a Risk,’ Even In a Changing Hollywood
When Lulu Wang’s “The Farewell” premiered at Sundance this past January, the filmmaker’s intimate family feature instantly inspired two types of headlines: chatter about Wang as a breakout talent, and major accolades for star Awkwafina, taking on her first big dramatic role. Hiring a rapper and actress best known for crafting jams like “My Vag” and offering up supporting laughs in films like “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising” was a bit of a gamble.

And while it paid off, with the A24 film earning big critical love (it currently sits at a rare 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), even the newly minted dramatic actress agrees that such risks are just part of her evolving career.

“I think that if I am cast in a production, already that means that production is kind of forward-thinking,” Awkwafina said in a recent interview with IndieWire. “Hiring me is always a risk, a little bit.

Revenge of the Nerd: Why Beanie Feldstein Is Hollywood’s Most Likely to Succeed
This year, Beanie Feldstein became immortal. First in Episode Two of FX’s vampire comedy, What We Do in the Shadows, when her character gets chomped. “Wowie-zowie!” she gasps. “Is this like a Tony Robbins unleash-the-power-within thing?” The reaction is quintessentially Beanie: an innocent thrilled by the flush of adventure.

Then it happened on the big screen, with her star-making turn in May’s genre-upending high school buddy comedy, Booksmart, where she played a good-nerd-gone-bad the night before graduation. How to Build a Girl, based on Caitlin Moran’s semiautobiographical

The Best American Actors Under 30 — IndieWire Critics Survey

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday.

This week’s question: Who is the best American actor / actress under 30, and why?

Lindsey Romain (@lindseyromain), Freelance for /Film, Vulture and Thrillist

I’ve never felt so fully attuned to a young actor than I have to Timmy Chalamet, who – even before breakthroughs in “Lady Bird” and “Call Me By Your Name” – was impressive as hell in smaller projects like “Homeland” and “Miss Stevens.” I knew right away that he was insanely and specifically talented, could recognize that raw talent, and can’t wait to see it flourish beyond his current constraints.

Kristen Lopez (@Journeys_Film), Freelance for Culturess, The Young Folks

In this landscape of increased diversity and a desire to elevate different voices I wanted to find an actor or actress who wasn’t the go-to person for this type of question.
