First you should know that this series isn't resolved at the end. There is a movie , Xi li ren qi: Zui zhong hui - Xing fu nan bu nan (2012), "The Fierce Wife Final Episode", made and set two years after the end of the TV series, that you can currently find on youtube that resolves the fierce wife's choices. I watched this series on Netflix, but they currently don't have the movie on Netflix. Minus one star for Netflix. The movie says it is four years later, but what they mean is four years after the divorce.
The plot is pretty simple, a seemingly good marriage of 10 years ends because of a crazy niece pursuing and winning the heart of the husband. The main characters all go through personal growth and mostly change into better people.
The husband, Wen Jui-fan (Sheng-hao Wen), falls for his wife's niece, Li Wei-en (Amanda Chu) who is clearly crazy, almost on a Fatal Attraction (1987) level. There are some very distasteful acts or attempts in the story by the crazy niece and ex-husband.
The wife, Hsieh An-chen (Sonia Sui), is the main character and is extremely forgiving and unselfish. She goes through a period of great growth that really doesn't get going until episode 28 where An-chen's boss Lan Tien-wei (Chris Wang) becomes her mentor and future suitor. I found the show a little painful for 27 episodes, but I'm glad I persevered, as there are some good moments.
The best characters in the TV series are An-chen's mother and Tien-wei's mother, loved them and very impressed by their actions.
The husband and niece make painfully poor choices and karma really gets going in episode 28. A side plot is the competition between the husband, Jui-fan and his coworker and ex-college girlfriend, Ho Ai-lin (Janel Tsai) for a vice-president opening at their company. Another side plot is the relationship of the husband's sister, Wen Jui-hsuan (Karen Ying-Chen Hu) and her cheating husband, Hao Kang-te (Patrick Pei-hsu Lee).
Eventually An-chen's choice boils down to getting back together with her ex-husband or accepting the advances of her former, younger boss, Tien-wei. In the final scene Tien-wei comes back from one year backpacking across China, writing newspaper articles with secret references to An-chen and writing a book to share a handshake with her. The handshake is ambivalent because in a prior scene it meant they were friends only, even though she has recently told her ex-husband that she can't go back to the way things were with him. Hence the movie set two years in the future from the end of this series.
I did like how the cheating brother-in-law changed and the resolution for Ai-lin, including her friendship with An-chen. Too funny Ai-lin marrying a balding, overweight ABC who teaches high school in rural America.
