An adorable and fun time all around
1 January 2019 | by OlicosmicSee all my reviews

(I'm reviewing the Nintendo Switch version)

Thanks to the astronomical failure that was the Wii U, I never got to play Super Mario 3D World. Although, I did play 3D Land and Odyssey, so I still got my dosage of Mario fun, even without a Wii U, since, funnily enough, I didn't know it was a separate console until a few years ago thanks to the terrible marketing. After this game, which is based off of the Captain Toad stages from SM3DW, was announced to be ported to the Switch, I was hyped, because it seemed like it had the same style that 3D World had, but in a style of a puzzle platformer. After picking it up and playing it, I can say with confidence that this is an excellent spin-off that can easily stand on it's own. The adorable, charming, and colorful visuals, the strategic and addictive gameplay, the good music, the great level design, and just everything in general really does live up to the Nintendo standard. It's charming, fun, and it gives Toad and Toadette a time to shine. I also love the fact that the Switch version has levels from Super Mario Odyssey, which is one of my favorite games of all time, so seeing levels from that game was a real treat. Despite me adoring this game to bits, I was disappointed about a few minor things. I noticed that this game is a bit on the shorter side. Not to say there's not enough, as the length is still definitely passable. But, I feel like another chapter or two would have helped. You also don't really get much for completing the game. It's still very fun to do, and there's still something awesome at the end (not saying it to avoid spoilers), but some completionists may be a bit disappointed. The SM3DW stages from the Wii U version were scrapped in favor of the SMO stages, which is a shame for those who wanted those stages, but as someone who's never played SM3DW, I don't feel too affected. Hopefully, they do come back down the road. Other than that, this is still a fantastic game that I recommend to any fan of Mario and/or puzzle platformers, because this an adorable and fun time all around.
