An ambitious mess
8 December 2015 | by FarmerShovelfuckSee all my reviews

When I saw the trailers for this movie, I brushed it off as just another typical ghost flick. However, it got descent reviews and the more I read about it, the more intrigued I got. It sounded like a gimmick movie, but an entire movie on Skype? Had that been done before? Not like that. I can like a good gimmick movie if it's done right. And... that is not at all what we have here.

I honestly don't know where to start with this crap. Time to make a list.

1. Okay, so the first thing that bothered me is, the whole movie is some sort of anti-bullying message, yet that fell apart for me because the girl that committed suicide and is now a ghost, we find out through exposition that she was a tramp and a bully herself. Where's the justification? If she was an innocent, friendly person who was fat or something, that would make more sense.

2. Despite being over Skype and hand-held footage the whole movie, the editors can't help themselves to add music stings and jump scares in the movie. Your gimmick pretty much dies right there, even Paranormal Activity understood this.

3. Every one of the six characters we see in the whole movie is annoying, obnoxious and irredeemable. We get lame lines, yelling and poor acting for that matter.

4. The little things that bothered me. I know I'm nitpicking but the movie wasn't compelling enough to distract me from those things so screw it. Why would the main girl text her boyfriend when he's right there on Skype? She asks where he's gone after literally seconds of not responding, nobody likes a nag. Certain characters die and there's obvious CGI blood, again killing the gimmick. Are they really arguing about weed in a life or death situation? The ghost hacks the main character's Itunes and plays music at convenient times (playing How You Lie Lie Lie by Connie Conway whenever someone was lying). The main girl had a piece of paper saying that someone will die if she shows it, and she actually does it!

5. The ending. Okay, so once the ghost kills off all the main character's friends, she's the last one and the ghost uploads a video showing that she was one of the one's responsible for her death. She then gets hate mail and death threats on her Facebook. What they should have done was have the main character kill herself, giving the movie some irony, but nope. She puts her laptop down and the ghost jumps out from the shadows and kills her. What the hell was the point of uploading the video then??

6. So let me get this straight, you have a ghost talking to you through means of typing on a computer while attaching scary videos to it. Sound familiar? It should. It's the same idea as that haunted Majora's Mask Creepypasta, except even that was more effective than this garbage.

Was there anything I liked? Well the scene where the guy realizes that ghost's camera was right behind him was kind of creative, but again, it's ruined by a laughably over-the-top death scene.

In terms of good ideas for movies done badly, this is right up there with the first Purge movie, except way worse.
