Cruella, Kit Harington and Black Panther’s Return: Everything We Learned at D23 Day Two

Not to be outdone by the avalanche of series orders and casting announcements bolstering the new streaming series Disney Plus, Walt Disney Studios showed off its film wares in a marathon presentation at D23 on Saturday.

The Anaheim, Calif. expo brought star power, if perhaps fewer surprises than Friday’s presentation, as fans in princess and villain cosplay lined the halls and clamored for glimpses at everyone from Angelina Jolie to Dwayne Johnson.

“We mean it when we say you’re not fans, you’re family,” said studio chief creative officer and co-chair Alan Horn, in introducing the lineup.

‘Frozen 2’ Honors Mom, Plus Sneak Peeks of ‘Soul,’ ‘Onward,’ and ‘Raya and the Last Dragon’ at D23

“Let it go?” As if! The long-awaited sequel to 2013’s modern Disney classic “Frozen” is due in theaters Nov. 22. Once again directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, this installment follows the gang as they set out on a journey to find the origin of Elsa’s powers in order to save their kingdom.

Idina Menzel, who plays Queen Elsa, is reunited with Kristen Bell, who voices Queen Anna. Josh Gad is back as snowman sidekick Olaf, with Jonathan Groff as iceman Kristoff, and Santino Fontana as Hans, also in tow. New additions to the film, which picks up three years after the original, include Evan Rachel Wood as the siblings’ mother, and Sterling K. Brown.

Disney Animation's Raya and the Last Dragon will star Cassie Steele and Awkwafina and arrive in November 2020.

Between Game of Thrones and the How to Train Your Dragon franchise, you might be getting a little sick of CGI dragons. Well guess what, bub? You'll be sick of dragons when Disney Says you're sick of dragons.

Disney announced during their D23 Expo in Anaheim, California that they are producing an animated film called Raya and the Last Dragon. Little is known about the plot thus far but it will follow the titular Raya as she tracks down the last dragon in the world. Disney also provided some intriguing art.

It's been confirmed that Gemma Chan is joining the cast of Marvel's Eternals. The news was revealed during Disney's massive movie panel at the D23 Expo. Chan will play Sersi, a member of the titular group. It has also been confirmed that rising star Barry Keoghan will portray another member of the Eternals, Druig, in the upcoming live-action adaptation of the Marvel Comics title. This adds to an already stacked cast, and it also adds an interesting layer to the McU overall.

It had previously been reported that Gemma Chan, best known for her role in Crazy Rich Asians, was being eyed for a role in Eternals. Awkwafina to Star in Disney’s Animated ‘Raya and the Last Dragon’ From ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Co-Writer

Disney treated fans at D23 Expo Saturday to their first look at “Raya and the Last Dragon,” a new animated film starring Awkwafina and written by Adele Lim, co-writer of “Crazy Rich Asians.”

Onstage at the expo in Anaheim, California, Awkwafuna, co-star Cassie Steele (“Degrassi: The Next Generation”), producer Osnat Shurer and Lim, explained that the film is inspired by Hong Kong action films with a setting inspired by Southeast Asia.

Set in Kumandra, a fantasy world with five lands and a sea shaped like a dragon, the film follows Raya (Steele), a lone warrior on a quest to find the last dragon, whom she believes can save Kumandra from a so-far unrevealed evil force. Awkwafina, meanwhile, plays Sisu, the last dragon, who has become trapped in a human body and needs Raya’s help to find the power to return to her dragon form.

Gemma Chan Confirmed At D23 To Rejoin Marvel Universe In ‘The Eternals’ – Update

Updated with confirmation at D23: Gemma Chan is officially in Marvel’s The Eternals, after she came out onstage with the rest of the cast during the film’s presentation at the D23 Expo in Anaheim.

Chan, who also plays Minn-Erva opposite Brie Larson in Captain Marvel, will play the humankind-loving Sersi. She is joined in the Eternals ensemble by newly announced Kit Harington, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Lauren Ridloff, Brian Tyree Henry, Lia McHugh and Don Lee.

Chloé Zhao is directing the Gods vs. Gods movie, adapted from the Jack Kirby-created comic that debuted in July 1976, It has a November 6, 2020 release date.

G.I. Joe spinoff Snake Eyes finds its Storm Shadow in Warrior’s Andrew Koji

Having cast the film’s lead earlier this month in Crazy Rich AsiansHenry Golding, Hasbro and Paramount Pictures have now found their Storm Shadow for the upcoming G.I. Joe spinoff movie Snake Eyes.

As revealed by The Wrap, Warrior star Andrew Koji has been cast as the fan favourite ninja assassin – a member of the Arashikage clan and blood brother to Snake Eyes before a bitter falling out between the two sees them becoming sworn enemies.

Storm Shadow previously appeared in Paramount’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and G.I. Joe: Retaliation, where he was portrayed by Lee Byung-hun.

Snake Eyes,” the third live-action film based on the “G.I. Joe” toy line, will focus on the origins of the fan-favorite character known for his masked face, black commando uniform and ninja training. Robert Schwentke, the director of “Red” and “R.I.P.D.,” is set to direct “Snake Eyes” for Paramount and Allspark Pictures, in association with Skydance. The film will be released on Oct. 16, 2020.

Rafe Spall, whose credits include “The Big Short” and “Shaun of the Dead,” leads the cast of romantic comedy “Long Story Short.” Studiocanal will handle worldwide sales on the film, which starts to shoot on Monday in Sydney, Australia.

The movie is written and directed by Josh Lawson, who was Oscar nominated last year for short film “The Eleven O’Clock.” Lawson’s first feature, “The Little Death,” premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 2014, won the SXSW Audience Award the following year, and was released in more than 30 territories. It has been remade in four languages, most notably in Spanish as “Kiki Love to Love,” which did more than one million admissions in Spain.

Summer totals for 2019 will be about $4.5 billion domestic, which is almost identical for the same period last year, when two original films were in the top 10: “Crazy Rich Asians” at #7, and “The Meg” at #9. This summer, the only original title is Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” at #10.

Director Steven Soderbergh has been playing his next film particularly close to the vest, but we finally have some details on the story and cast. Let Them All Talk is a comedy starring Meryl Streep, Candice Bergen, Dianne Wiest, Gemma Chan, and Lucas Hedges.

Steven Soderbergh teams with Meryl Streep and Gemma Chan for Let Them All Talk

We’re still a couple of weeks out from the premiere of next newest film The Laundromat, but The Playlist is reporting that filmmaker Steven Soderbergh has already kicked off production on his next project, titled Let Them All Talk.

While plot details are being kept under wraps, the new film reunites Soderbergh and The Laundromat’s Meryl Streep, while Crazy Rich Asians and Captain Marvel’s Gemma Chan is also on board.

Filming on Let Them All Talk is now underway in New York, with Soderbergh said to be making use of the upcoming Red Komodo Dragon cameras, making it one of the first feature films to do so alongside David Fincher’s Mank.

Soderbergh’s Panama Papers drama The Laundromat will premiere at the Venice Film Festival on September 1st, and sees Streep starring alongside the likes of Gary Oldman, Antonio Banderas, Jeffrey Wright, Sharon Stone, Alex Pettyfer,
