Watch J.J. Abrams Auction Off Star Wars 9 Plot for $10K
Star Wars has been big on charity work during the Disney era. Over the course of making each one of the new movies, Disney and Lucasfilm have found quite a few opportunities to auction off amazing experiences for fans. It gives Star Wars lovers something special and it does some good for those who need it. Last night, J.J. Abrams auctioned off the chance for one lucky fan to have him whisper the plot of Star Wars 9 to them two years in advance. While the winning bid was high, it didn't go down how you'd expect.

The auction of the Star Wars 9 plot was part of HBO's Night of Too Many Stars, which was held to benefit Next for Autism. Jon Stewart was hosting the event and, at one point, he decided to bring J.J. Abrams out on stage to offer up this special opportunity. Then the bidding started. Things

Ghosted Could Be the Bromantic Grown Up Stranger Things You Didn't Know You Were Waiting For

Ghosted Could Be the Bromantic Grown Up Stranger Things You Didn't Know You Were Waiting For
Would you believe that Adam Scott and Craig Robinson have never worked together before? That seems like an impossible fact, because it's not true. They were both in the classic film Hot Tub Time Machine 2, but not even that piece of high art could prepare us for the bromance at the center of Ghosted, between two guys who have never met before and have little in common...at first. The Fox series, which premieres this Sunday, tells the tale of two random dudes—Leroy (Robinson), a skeptical and very skilled former real cop and current mall cop who accidentally got his old partner killed, and Max (Scott), a book store employee and disgraced Harvard professor who lost his wife to an...

Fun Mom Dinner movie review: stay at home, moms

MaryAnn’s quick take… Stereotypes and contrived shenanigans don’t seem to actually offer much catharsis for harried moms seeking escape. And the dads inevitably butt into their me-time. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for stories about women

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Fun? Nope, not for us. Dinner? Mostly offscreen. Moms? Check… though even here, in a movie allegedly devoted to mom time, they have to share the spotlight with dads. Wtf?

Fun Mom Dinner (the title sounds like a Japanglish attempt to sound cool) starts off promising enough, with Toni Collette’s (Krampus, Miss You Already) Kate complaining about how child-focused the interactions of so many women can be — “I’m mommed out,” she sighs, with a refreshing lack of reverence for motherhood, something that cinema is sorely lacking — and with Katie Aselton’s (The Gift,

Ghosted Cast Talks X-Files Crossover Potential, Guest Star Meryl Streep?!
Adam Scott and Craig Robinson, of Fox’s new comedy Ghosted, already seem like a match made in sitcom heaven — but it isn’t the first time that the former Parks and Rec and Office employees have appeared on screen together.

“We knew each other from Hot Tub Time Machine 2,” Robinson reminds Michael Ausiello during a sit-down at TVLine’s Comic-Con interview suite, to which Scott deadpans, “You’re welcome.” All jokes aside, Scott is eager for people to see Ghosted, which he says harkens back to classic 1980s buddy comedies such as Beverly Hills Cop and Ghostbusters. But

The Best Movie Posters of 2016

  • MUBI
1. CosmosAdam Maida’s silent scream for Andrzej Zulawski’s swansong Cosmos is a poster that cries out to be noticed. Channeling the starkest of Polish poster design—think Mieczyslaw Wasilewski or Andrzej Pagowski—Maida’s design is as deceptively crude as it is beautifully executed. I love everything about this poster, down to its hand-lettering, that tiny hanged bird and the even tinier—nice if you can get away with it—billing block. Maida’s witty, diagrammatic work has already graced Criterion covers for Nagisa Oshima’s Death by Hanging, John Frankenheimer’s The Manchurian Candidate, and Costa-Gavras’s The Confession and State of Siege, but it is his eye-catching black-and-white editorial illustration/montages for the New York Times that this most reminds me of. You can see more of his work here.2. The HandmaidenTrees and a hanging also feature heavily in my second favorite poster of the year: an

Office Christmas Party movie review: messtivities

MaryAnn’s quick take… Hangover lite, with even more tepid notions of what constitutes debauchery, plus a true dedication to strained contrivance. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

I’m “biast” (con): not a fan of grossout comedies

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

You know those really dumb comedies where the only actually funny bits are the outtakes that run over the end credits, where everyone is finally on their game and the humor comes loose and fast and unconstructed, and you think, “Gee, why isn’t the whole movie like that?”? This is not the case with Office Christmas Party. Ocp — not to be confused with the evil robotics corporation in Robocop, which is more fun on a Friday after-work drinks thing than this movie — is, if I recall correctly, the first instance of end-credits clips that are as precisely forced and flat as
