‘Hustlers’ Banned by Malaysia

  • Indiewire
Malaysia has deemed Lorene Scafaria’s “Hustlers” too vulgar for audiences. The country’s censorship board said no way to the film’s apparent parade of nudity and eroticism. The film’s international distributor confirmed the ban on social media today. See the post below.

Hustlers” last weekend took the second spot at the top-10 box office, beneath “It Chapter Two,” and is currently riding high on rave reviews — as well as Oscar buzz for star Jennifer Lopez, who plays a streetwise stripper who takes ingénue Constance Wu under her wing (and into her fur coat).

The film’s nudity and sex are relatively light, but apparently went too far for Malaysian censors, who have a long history of banning films. “Alien: Covenant,” “Black Swan,” “Bad Moms,” “How to Be Single,” “Fifty Shades of Grey,” and, weirdly, “Beauty and the Beast” were all given the ax by Malaysia. Darren Aronofsky’s “mother!

Tiff Review: ‘Dogs Don’t Wear Pants’ Shows Dominatrix-Mandated Therapy as a Path for Resolution

The thesis of the impeccably directed Dogs Don’t Wear Pants is that you can teach a dog new tricks, especially if that dog has a threshold and an appetite for extreme pain. Although J-p Valkeapää’s picture is not screening in Tiff’s Midnight Madness category, it very well could be–the experience is as gory and as harrowing as one’s standard horror film.

Those seeking a sex-positive portrait of bondage may, however, be offended as limits are pushed beyond the playful into something darker with lasting damage. Years ago on Howard Stern he interviewed a woman whose sexual fantasy was to be amputated during sex; here, protagonist Juha finds himself entering the bondage scene as a form of atonement and therapy to deflect from his pain and anxiety. As a surgeon, he’s numb to blood and gore as evidenced early in the film’s explicit imagery

Two Experimental Toronto Films Give Jamie Dornan a New Shade

Two Experimental Toronto Films Give Jamie Dornan a New Shade
In a landscape rife with superhero sequels and action tentpoles, you can’t blame a modern movie star for wanting a palate cleanser

Jamie Dornan, who shot to fame with the steamy “Fifty Shades of Grey” film trilogy, has two movies playing Toronto that give some insight into the next phase of his career, after putting the $1.3 billion-earning Universal franchise to bed in 2018.

“I’m very, very fortunate to have a bit of say in what I do, and a choice on what films I take,” Dornan told Variety during a conversation about two projects he’s got playing this year’s festival: Drake Doremus’ “Endings, Beginnings” and “Synchronic,” from directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead.

In the former, he plays a thirtysomething in Los Angeles whose good nature and quiet humility stands out against that of his best friend, a bad boy played by Sebastian Stan. Both men fall

Toronto Film Review: ‘Endings, Beginnings’

Toronto Film Review: ‘Endings, Beginnings’
There’s nothing tidy about Daphne’s love life — and if there were, she probably wouldn’t make a very compelling character. Daphne, who is played by Shailene Woodley in what is simultaneously her most realistic and least accessible performance yet, recently broke up with her boyfriend, moving back into her sister’s pool house. That split had something to do with a drunken one-night stand. And now, though she’s sworn herself to six months of sobriety and celibacy, Daphne can’t deny her attraction to two totally different guys, Jack (Jamie Dornan) and Frank (Sebastian Stan), who just so happen to be best friends.

This movie — whose title, “Endings, Beginnings,” is cutesily withheld until just before the credits roll — is like the mumblecore version of “The Philadelphia Story,” wherein Katharine Hepburn sleeps with both suitors, discovers she’s pregnant by one of them and winds up “Bringing Up Baby

‘On Becoming a God’ Star Discusses That Kinky, Slap-Happy Scene

‘On Becoming a God’ Star Discusses That Kinky, Slap-Happy Scene
[Editor’s Note: The following interview contains spoilers for “On Becoming a God in Central Florida” Episode 4, “Manifest Destinee.”]

On Showtime’s satirical “On Becoming a God in Central Florida,” the destructive Fam pyramid scheme has torn families apart and could even be blamed for the death of one character by alligator. But on Sunday’s episode, the havoc it wreaks actually ends up bringing two people together in a kinky, mutually consensual way.

When single mom Krystal Stubbs (Kirsten Dunst) realizes that her actions have led to Cody Bonar (Théodore Pellerin) rising in the Fam ranks, she insists they’re now business partners. When he tries to object, she slaps him until… the mood shifts. Aroused by her forcefulness, he leans in for a kiss, but she grabs his neck in a chokehold. He allows himself to be subjugated and happily concedes that she’s now calling the shots. The episode ends with him willingly giving her oral sex.

“I was so surprised when I read that. It’s definitely a turning point.

How Dakota Johnson Avoided Typecasting After ‘Fifty Shades of Grey': ‘There Weren’t a Lot of Big, Naked Franchises’ (Video)
Since breaking out as a movie star in the steamy big screen adaptation of “Fifty Shades of Grey,” Dakota Johnson has managed to navigate Hollywood through a series of daring indies and projects with auteur directors, while avoiding roles similar to that R-rated sexcapade.

No role has been more different from Anastasia in “Fifty Shades” than the one in her latest film, “The Friend,” which made its premiere Friday at the Toronto International Film Festival. In “The Friend,” Johnson plays a woman who receives a terminal cancer diagnosis and is told she has only a few months to live.

When asked if she found that she was getting offered the same sort of sexy role following the success of the high-profile “Fifty Shades” franchise — as it often happens with many young actresses of a certain age — Johnson explained why that didn’t happen.

“Not really, no. There’s not a lot like those movies.

Dane (Segel) moves in with Nicole (Johnson), Matt (Affleck) and their two daughters as the cancer takes hold, but we discover that he is struggling with his own demons.

Sam Taylor-Johnson: ‘I’ve lost people very dear to me through addiction’

The film-maker on adapting James Frey’s controversial rehab memoir A Million Little Pieces, whether she’s still making art and the joy of chickens

Since leaving the art world to become a film-maker, Sam Taylor-Johnson has shown impressive range. Her debut feature film, Nowhere Boy (2009), was a tender depiction of John Lennon’s childhood. She followed it with the less tender Fifty Shades of Grey in 2015. Now she’s back with A Million Little Pieces, an adaptation of James Frey’s scandalous semi-memoir about his rehab after years as an alcoholic and drug addict. Taylor-Johnson co-wrote the screenplay with her husband, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who also stars in the film. They live, most of the time, in Los Angeles.

You read A Million Little Pieces when it came out in 2003. It obviously stayed with you?

Yeah, it did. I remember reading it and being really overtaken by it; I think is the right word.

After We Collided Is in the Works, and the Cast Looks Ready to Bring on the Drama

(Hint: his name rhymes with "Scary Smiles.") So if you thought the erotic One Direction fan fiction written by Kat on Euphoria was wild, that's only because you've never heard of After and its sequels. Here's everything we know about the cast for the forthcoming flick so far.
