Alan and Celia test sportscar and hold engagement party. Gillian tells son Raff secret of his dad's fatal accident, and copes with amorous Paul. Caroline faces rumors of kissing teacher Kate; husband John faces visit of lover Judith.
Next day at school Caroline is shocked that Kate has mentioned their fling to teacher Michael Dobson though she thwarts his blackmail attempt. She also agrees to discuss with John the possibility of a reconciliation. However she has second thoughts when her elder son William tells her that he came home to find John drinking with Judith, the 'other woman'. Caroline and Gillian reconcile and Gillian has sex with the much younger Paul whilst her father is out. Alan and Celia are blissfully happy and decide to buy a sports car rather than an engagement ring. Alan tells Celia that Eddie,Gillian's husband, was a violent brute, who killed himself and did not die in an accident. Eventually Gillian tells Raffy this and soon afterwards he is arrested for attacking Paul.
Celia and Alan's daughters have their own challenges to face. Caroline has let her husband John move after having left her several months before for a woman named Judith. She's ended a budding relationship with a teacher, Kate, and is aghast when she learns that her paramour confided in another teacher who is known for his lack of discretion. Alan's daughter Gillian meanwhile continues to have problems with her son Raff who has come under the influence of her brother-in-law policeman Robbie, who is convinced that his brother did not die in an accident but was killed - by Gillian. She also continue her romp with Paul, who is actually engaged to marry someone else. As for Celia and Alan, they decide to forego a wedding ring and buy themselves a new car. They have a small engagement party at the farm that ends rather abruptly when Raff is arrested for assault and Gillian learns that John's ex-girlfriend Judith had just spent a drunken afternoon in her house.
Celia bargains to jointly buy what they've "always wanted", a red sportscar, if delivered at their engagement party. Her daughter, principal Caroline, brushes off teacher who brings rumors of her affair while separated, and agrees husband John can move into same bedroom that night. At the party, policeman Robbie arrests nephew Raff for assaulting Paul for insulting Gillian, who knows he is engaged and gave in to "half an hour" bed-bouncing. Edward, carsick enroute, admits to seeing John and lover Judith drunk at home. Everyone drives away from farm but John, aggrieved because he got his alcoholic ex-girlfriend sloshed just to get rid of her.
