Chinese Artist Ai Weiwei Accuses ‘I Love You, Berlin’ Producers of Censorship

Chinese Artist Ai Weiwei Accuses ‘I Love You, Berlin’ Producers of Censorship
The executive producer of anthology film “Berlin, I Love You” is engaged in a war of words with Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei, whose contribution to the movie was left on the cutting-room floor.

Ai contends that the segment he shot for “Berlin, I Love You” was axed by the producers for political reasons, out of fear of upsetting Chinese officials. But Emmanuel Benbihy, the film’s Shanghai-based executive producer, says that Ai’s segment did not meet the requirements for inclusion and that the award-winning artist is obsessed with criticizing China.

“Berlin, I Love You,” whose short takes feature such stars as Helen Mirren and Keira Knightley, was submitted to the Berlin Film Festival but failed to land a slot, even out of competition or in one of the fest’s sidebars. Instead, it began its commercial career with a Feb. 8 theatrical release, handled by Saban Films, in the U.

Film Review: ‘Berlin, I Love You’

  • Variety
Film Review: ‘Berlin, I Love You’
If you truly love Berlin, and belong to the film industry, chances are you’re there right now attending the Berlinale, where roughly 400 movies unspool over 11 days. The Berlin Film Festival takes place annually in early February, one of the least pleasant times of year to experience a city where, in the half dozen instances I’ve been, someone always apologizes for the weather — with its rain, sleet, and iced-over streets — and helpfully suggests, “You really should come back in summer.”

And so, this year, I have no regrets sitting out the festival, choosing instead to visit the city vicariously via “Berlin, I Love You,” the latest in the “Cities of Love” series that gave us “Paris, je t’aime” and similar stopovers in New York and Rio. If you’ve seen any of those movies, you know the drill: The producers pick a glamorous international metropolis and invite a

‘Berlin, I Love You’ Film Review: Latest City-Based Anthology Is a Deutsch Dud

‘Berlin, I Love You’ Film Review: Latest City-Based Anthology Is a Deutsch Dud
The juxtaposition of moments in time, such as one person experiencing immense joy and another hitting rock bottom, or someone dying while someone else is being born, has always been an intriguing concept in film. But there’s a certain finesse that goes into making each separate vignette engaging — and in some cases, even urgent — so that these slivers of tales resonate with the audience. Unfortunately, “Berlin, I Love You” lacks that essential finesse.

This fourth installment of the “Cities of Love” franchise centers on Berlin and, like the other segments, tells ten not-so-interwoven stories that illuminate various themes including love and loss. There’s the woman (Keira Knightley) who takes in an abandoned Arabic child, much to the chagrin of her disapproving mother (Helen Mirren). There’s also the Hollywood actor (Luke Wilson) grappling with his stagnant career and looking for something, or someone, who can exhilarate him once again.

First Look at Hilary Duff in The Haunting of Sharon Tate
The 50th anniversary of the Sharon Tate murders happens next year, and there is more interest in the heinous crime than ever before. Most attention has been placed on Quentin Tarantino's upcoming epic Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which will use the Tate murder as a wraparound for its 60s set story. But there is another Sharon Tate movie coming, and today we have a first look at this true crime psychological thriller.

The Haunting of Sharon Tate stars former Disney princess Hilary Duff in the title role. And she has already been lambasted by Sharon Tate's sister over the movie. It's Margot Robbie playing Sharon Tate in Tarantino's film, which has garnered less vitriol from the Tate family. A first look photo shows what Duff has in store while embedding the character.

‘Game of Thrones’ Star Sibel Kekilli Talks Shae, Being German and Turkish
German actress Sibel Kekilli is best-known to American audiences for her role as Shae, the prostitute-turned-mistress of Tyrion Lannister in HBO’s “Game of Thrones.” An outspoken feminist of Turkish descent, Kekiilli spoke to Variety at Italy’s Lucca Comics about the culture clash she’s been contending with since the start of her career, and why she likes to play women who, like Shae, are survivors.

You are publicizing “Game of Thrones” at this Tuscan meet dedicated to fandom and cosplay, which clearly indicates how much fans love Shae, who died in Season 4. What do you think makes this conflicted woman, who betrays her lover and is killed by him, such a powerful character?

She’s a complex character and a strong one. After my first audition, the writers changed Shae from how she is in the book, where she was more of a gold digger. But of course,
