Michael Ahr Dec 10, 2019

There are a lot of mysteries to unravel in NBC’s hit drama, Manifest. From those who wonder about the five-year time jump of Flight 828 the flight that experienced moments of turbulence while the world fast forwarded, to those who speculate about the nature of the so-called “callings” that suddenly allow those same passengers to know things they can’t possible know, the show inspires plenty of fan theories.

Fortunately, Manifest: The Official Podcast has launched! The NBC-endorsed venture will explore the puzzles that remain and tease conflicts to come. The audio offering will serve up four episodes a week through the end of the year with showrunner and creator Jeff Rake at the helm, giving those looking to refresh their memories with a

James Badge Dale Discusses The Challenge Of ‘Mickey And The Bear’ & Working With Directors Like Martin Scorsese [Interview]

James Badge Dale is one of the hardest working actors out there. He’s always conscious, and very much cares about, the power of creative collaboration. Badge (as he prefers to be called) is the type of actor who disappears so effortlessly into his roles that every movie buff might think of a different project when his name pops up in conversation. He was Jack Bauer’s partner on the third season of “24,” shot Leo’s brains out in “The Departed,” and was the lead of AMC’s criminally underappreciated series, “Rubicon.”

Following his show’s cancellation, the actor found quite a stride in big-budget studio films, stealing the spotlight of movies ranging from “Iron Man 3” to “The Lone Ranger” and “Flight.” He’s been featured in phenomenal indie gems such as Steve McQueen’s “Shame,” and the recent, under-sung tension boiler, “The Standoff At Sparrow Creek,” which feels

Robert Zemeckis in Talks to Direct Live-Action ‘Pinocchio’ for Disney (Exclusive)
Robert Zemeckis is in early talks to direct Disney’s live-action “Pinocchio.”

Andrew Miano and Chris Weitz will produce through their company Depth of Field with Weitz penning the script. “Paddington” director Paul King had originally been tapped to direct but had to leave the project for unknown reasons at the beginning of the year. David Heyman, who was on board to produce, is also no longer involved with the film.

Though a deal hasn’t closed yet, Zemeckis has been eyeing the project since this summer. He was still, however, working on his current pic “The Witches” for Warner Bros. and didn’t want to commit to a new film until “The Witches” made more progress in production. With that film in post-production now, Zemeckis began turning his sights on his next project, with “Pinocchio” high on his list.

The famous director will now look to gear up the casting process,

‘Welcome to Marwen’ Blu-ray Review

  • Nerdly
Stars: Steve Carell, Eiza González, Leslie Mann, Diane Kruger, Janelle Monáe | Written by Caroline Thompson, Robert Zemeckis | Directed by Robert Zemeckis

Robert Zemeckis’ recent cinematic entities have entailed one single word if anything else is “mediocre”. The one-time directing king of spectacle with Cast Away, Back to the Future, Forrest Gump etc., has, in the last decade, delivered slog after slog in the likes of underwhelming pictures in Allied, Beowulf, Flight, The Walk and now Welcome to Marwen. A living breathing tragedy of a film if ever you’re unfortunate to witness one develop in front of your eyes. Zemeckis latest is a masterclass of how to convey every sense of the phrase “tone-deaf” into the medium of film. An absolute disaster from start to finish with one of the most truly painful performances I’ve had to endure in Steve Carell in his constant need for attention in the dramatic sense of performance.

Sundance Review: ‘Native Son’ Gives Ashton Sanders a Bold, Complex Canvas

In Native Son—artist Rashid Johnson’s feature film debut and adaptation of the 1940 Richard Wright novel of the same name—Moonlight’s Ashton Sanders finds himself once again in a similarly complex, utterly electrifying coming-of-age triptych. Fortunately, in this 2019 Sundance highlight, Sanders is given a canvas all his own: one that’s spacious enough for him to fully let loose and create that rare sort of character that feels like a force of nature.

Sanders plays Bigger Thomas, a young Chicagoan who walks, works, and lives with a gangly unpredictability: he rocks green hair, streetwear adorned with punk scene messaging, and isn’t shy about his deep appreciation of classical music. He’s deemed a “wild card” by girlfriend Bessie (KiKi Layne), a hardworking student who sees the best in Bigger, but the summation of her partner is a damning one.

At the top of the film, we see Bigger in his bedroom,

‘Native Son’ Film Review: Updated Take Shows Richard Wright’s Classic Remains All Too Relevant

‘Native Son’ Film Review: Updated Take Shows Richard Wright’s Classic Remains All Too Relevant
Revamping Richard Wright’s 1940 seminal novel via a modern adaptation by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks, first-time feature director Rashid Johnson has made a thunderous impression with “Native Son,” which had its world premiere Thursday at the Sundance Film Festival.

A gut-punch of a debut that examines race relations in America with unabashed force, Johnson’s present-day interpretation proves, disgracefully, how pertinent Wright’s text remains.

Still set in Chicago and subdivided into “Fate,” “Fear,” and “Flight” segments (as in the source material but in rearranged order), the thought-provoking film is steered by Bigger “Big” Thomas, a non-conformist African American youth garbed in a customized leather jacket and sporting green hair.

Why ‘Welcome To Marwen’ Was Unwelcome At The Box Office: Robert Zemeckis Pic To Lose Around $60M

  • Deadline
Why ‘Welcome To Marwen’ Was Unwelcome At The Box Office: Robert Zemeckis Pic To Lose Around $60M
For the third time since his 2012 Oscar-nominated film Flight, filmmaker Robert Zemeckis tanked at the box office last weekend, with Universal/DreamWorksWelcome to Marwen bottoming out with $2.3M at 1,911 theaters.

This feature adaptation of the 2010 documentary Marwencol was an attempt by the director to deliver a similar type of heart-string-pulling drama that moviegovers have come to expect from the Oscar-winning Zemeckis, who often infuses his work with VFX, specifically motion-capture. Audiences didn’t buy the pitch dispensing God-awful exit scores of two stars, 57% positive and a 37% definite recommend on PostTrak with a B- on CinemaScore.

Marwen, based on a true story, stars Steve Carell as Mark Hogancamp, who after being brutally attacked, heals his Ptsd through art therapy constructing miniature WWII scenes of mostly female dolls. Ahead of Marwen‘s release, social media monitor RelishMix noticed a mixed reaction online among moviegoers with

Steve Carell’s ‘Welcome to Marwen’ to Lose $50 Million at Box Office

  • Variety
Steve Carell’s ‘Welcome to Marwen’ to Lose $50 Million at Box Office
It’s shaping up to be a pretty bleak holiday season for Steve Carell and Robert Zemeckis after “Welcome to Marwen” flopped last weekend in spectacular fashion. The $40 million drama about a man’s attempts to overcome his Ptsd is one of the biggest bombs of the year, debuting to a disastrous $2.4 million from 1,191 theaters. It stands to lose between $45 million to $50 million when marketing and distribution costs are taken into account, according to rival studio executives, an embarrassing result for both Carell and Zemeckis.

“Welcome to Marwen” is also the worst wide-release major studio debut of 2018 — tying with Johnny Knoxville’s dud “Action Point” for that ignominious distinction — and a career-worst wide-release start for the A-list actor and the director. Compounding the pervasive air of disaster, “Welcome to Marwen” is the second big turkey for Universal Studios in as many weeks. The studio also stands to lose $125 million-plus on “Mortal Engines,
