A great start.

You just know after the first part that what follows is going to be great. The series kicks off in some style, with plenty going on in this first part.

Initially you're dubious as to why Kit is refusing to introduce Angie to his mum Helena, but as soon as you see and hear her, you get an understanding of his reluctance. Let's face it, it's a great drama, it's well made, well written, but it's all about the performance of Diana Rigg. As soon as you see her she takes over, she looks sensational, and is overloaded with charisma and presence. An incredible casting, one of her finest television roles.

I loved the black and white cutaway to Helena's childhood, you get an insight into her personality at a very young age, you see how important loyalty and treachery are to her. A very dark series of scenes, but an important insight into Helena.

So well acted, Fiona Gillies was great, as was James Grout. James Wilby was such a handsome man in those days, brilliant, measured performance from him also.

Such a brilliant drama, why on Earth has it never been released on DVD? Makes no sense.
