Storyline

July 1917. As Isobel's plan to turn Downton into a hospital unites upstairs and downstairs in protest, O'Brien persuades Cora to make Thomas the hospital manager. Ethel enjoys the patients' attention whilst Edith earns respect as an auxiliary nurse. Chauffeur Branson, extolling the Russian Revolution, intends to be a conscientious objector but is rejected on medical grounds as former footman William, on his way to the trenches, proposes to Daisy. As Lang finds his trauma interferes with his work Anna discovers Bates working in a local pub. He tells her that Vera has been unfaithful and he is hopeful of a divorce. Violet and Rosamund learn that Carlisle coerced a reluctant Lavinia into exposing government secrets by using her father's debt - thus the engagement is still on. Written by don @ minifie-1

Trivia

Branson mentions Alexander Karensky, the Socialist leader of Russia who overthrew the Czar in 1917. However, hiss rule was short-lived as the same year his government was in turn overthrown by the Bolsheviks led by Vladimir Lenin. See more »

Goofs

When Lavinia asks how long Lady Rosamund had lived in her London house, Lady Rosamund says she and her late husband bought it shortly after they were married. This is in contrast to what was said in the first season, when Lord Grantham refers to Lady Rosamund's "new house in Eaton Square." See more »

Quotes

Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham: [about Sir Richard arguing with Lavinia in the garden] But what do you think it meant?
Lady Mary Crawley: Really, Granny. Lavinia Swire knows Richard Carlisle. So what? One knows lots of people in London.
Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham: I don't know many people who'd threaten me behind the laurels.

Downton Abbey becomes a hospital
20 December 2017 | by jp281995See all my reviews

Lady Cora and Mrs. Crawley clash as they run the beautiful estate turned convalescent home, and the Crawleys adjust to their new life and help the wounded. Anna locates Bates with the help of Lady Mary, who, meanwhile, finds it hard to reveal that she still loves Matthew.

Lady Edith is finally recognized for her good work, and I feel glad for her. Mrs. Crawley acts bossy, which annoys Lady Cora. Miss O'Brien still feels guilty for what she had done to Lady Cora, and she tries to make things right by making her mistress happy.
