Supergirl Is Flying to the Big Screen — But Melissa Benoist Won't Be Playing Her

While comic book fans have been awaiting word on whether or not Henry Cavill will be getting the chance to play the role of Superman again following 2017's Justice League, Deadline is reporting that Warner Brothers has decided to give his cousin another shot at big screen stardom as Supergirl has gone into development. But without Melissa Benoist, who currently plays the character on the CW's Supergirl. The film, which is in the early stages, is being written by Oren Uziel. His previous credits are an interesting mix of comedy, drama, and horror, among them 22 Jump Street, Freaks of Nature, The Cloverfield Paradox, and next year’s live-action Sonic the Hedgehog. Beyond Supergirl, he’s got 10 different projects in various stages of development. For a little background: The Kryptonian name of Supergirl is Kara Zor-El (earth identity Linda Danvers), who was sent from the doomed planet of Krypton

And that’s great! But there’s no reason why that spotlight should be limited to only one month, particularly when there are so many brilliant and talented female filmmakers working in the genre. Why not use this October to hit up these titles on Shudder and get to know some of the most exciting female voices in horror right now?

Prevenge (2016, dir. Alice Lowe) Alice Lowe writes, directs, and stars in this darkly comic, twisted fantasy about a woman who is very, very pregnant (Lowe herself was pregnant during shooting) and goes on a killing spree when her unborn baby talks to her and tells her to take revenge for a past tragedy. The film never fully transcends its gimmick,

Netflix's Shimmer Lake Trailer Unravels a Backwards Mystery
With just a few weeks until it debuts on the streaming service, Netflix has unveiled the first trailer for the upcoming indie Shimmer Lake, which is slated to arrive June 9. This dark comedy is set during the aftermath of a bank robbery in a small town, but nothing is as it seems, including the actual format of the movie itself. While we can't exactly tell from the trailer, this movie is told in reverse time.

Netflix debuted the trailer for this darkly comic crime thriller on YouTube today, which follows a local sheriff named Zeke Sikes (Benjamin Walker) hunting three bank robbery suspects, one of whom is his brother Andy (Rainn Wilson). From the trailer's opening moments, we can tell that Zeke is a straight shooter, so to speak, telling his young niece Sally (Isabel Dove) that everyone in town thinks they can do whatever they want with no repercussions.

The J.J. Abrams-Produced Sci-Fi Flick God Particle Will Be The Next Film In The Cloverfield Series

Upcoming space-set adventure, God Particle, is going to be set in the same universe as both Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane, The Wrap reports. Though both previous movies only shared tenuous connections, they were supposed to take place in the same continuity, and this new J.J. Abrams-produced sci-fi film will follow suit. In fact, word is Abrams and Paramount Pictures plan to develop more movies in the coming years to form a sort of Cloverfield Cinematic Universe. How exactly they'll all wind up interconnecting remains to be seen, but it's certainly an intriguing prospect. God Particle (probably not the final title) is about a group of astronauts who make "a shocking discovery, that changes the fabric of reality, leading to a fight for their survival," and stars David Oyelowo, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Ziyi Zhang, Elizabeth Debicki, Daniel Brühl and Chris O’Dowd. The movie is directed by Oren Uziel (22 Jump Street,

She was also seen in the genre mash-up comedy thriller Freaks of Nature, and has a role in Blade Runner 2.

David Oyelowo And Gugu Mbatha-Raw Join Search For Bad Robot’s God Particle

On the heels of steering 10 Cloverfield Lane out of the shadows and toward box office success, J.J. Abrams is dusting himself down in preparation for his latest producing gig with Bad Robot’s God Particle.

Since nailing down a 2017 release window, the brainy sci-fi feature has been quietly picking up steam in a genre that has no shortage of high-profile features in the pipeline – namely Passengers and Seth Rogen’s The Something – with today bringing word that David Oyelowo (Selma) and Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Concussion) have enlisted for Julius Onah’s upcoming thriller.

No details were given as to the characters they’ll play, though it’s a safe bet that they’ll portray some of the scientists dabbling with the elusive Higgs Boson. While we're just a few months away from Warner Bros. launching their DC Comics movie universe, a new project is moving forward on the small screen, which puts a new spin on the superhero landscape. Back in August, NBC issued a pilot production commitment for a workplace comedy entitled Powerless. Now TV Line reports the potential series has added its first cast member, Vanessa Hudgens. The series is set at one of the worst insurance companies in America, which is set within the DC Comics universe.

Vanessa Hudgens will play Emily Locke, a claims adjuster who loves her job because it gives her the ability to help people in need. Bad Robot Pegs Doug Jung’s Sci-Fi God Particle For 2017 Release

Bad Robot and Paramount pulled the rug out from underneath us all by unveiling that 10 Cloverfield Lane, the quasi-sequel to Matt Reeves’ 2008 creature freature, would creep into theaters next month. But there’s another low-budget sci-fi simmering in development at Bad Robot, and that is Julius Onah’s new feature God Particle.

Having welcomed aboard Star Trek Beyond scribe Doug Jung before the turn of the year, the studio has now officially locked in God Particle for a release on February 24, 2017.

Outside of Onah and Jung, there’s no word of casting for Bad Robot’s futuristic sci-fi at the time of writing, though we understand the latter was drafted in to rewrite a script originally pitched by Freaks of Nature and 22 Jump Street scribe, Oren Uziel.

In physics, God Particle is the evocative moniker given to the Higgs boson, a subatomic particle that gives mass to other particles. Over the past half-decade or so,

Freaks of Nature is Freaky Good Fun – Geek Girl Navigating the World

A friend of mine and I were deciding what we wanted to do Halloween night and came to the conclusion we wanted to see a movie. I checked times on the local theater’s website and noticed a movie called “Freaks of Nature.”

The blurb describing the movie said it involved zombies, vampires, and humans co-existing in the town of Dillford, until aliens show up and, essentially, wreck everything. As soon as I read this blurb out loud, my friend’s face lit up, he grinned, and said “We have to go to that one.”

So, we did. We had no expectations. The only name we recognized in the miniscule summary was Joan Cusack, and they didn’t even bother to mention what her role would be. The poster looks like it could have come from any teen-centric horror movie from the very late seventies to the mid-eighties, easily. It

'The Martian' Wins Again During Worst Box Office Weekend of 2015

'The Martian' Wins Again During Worst Box Office Weekend of 2015
Last weekend, 20th Century Fox's blockbuster The Martian returned to take the top spot at the box office, fending off four new releases, which all flopped. This gave the thriller its third win in four weeks. This weekend, the sci-fi drama faced off against three more new movies, The Weinstein Company's Burnt, Warner Bros.' Our Brand Is Crisis and Paramount's Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, just one day before Halloween. Like last weekend's crop of new releases, the weekend estimates at Box Office Mojo reveal these latest titles provided just another round of flops, as The Martian took the top spot with $11.4 million, bringing forth the worst box office weekend of 2015.

The Martian has earned $182.8 million since its release on October 2, debuting at $54.3 million. While that isn't an astronomical opening weekend by any means, it continues to post minimal decreases in each frame, dropping just 31.9% in its second weekend,
