Family Comedy from Erica Oyama in Development at Fox

Erica Oyama: Steamy Awards/YouTube

Sarah Gertrude Shapiro and Marti Noxon’s “UnREAL” has earned rave reviews for depicting the disturbing drama and ugliness behind the scenes of a “Bachelor”-esque reality show. But before the Lifetime series came along, E!’s “Burning Love” took a more comedic approach to riffing on the long-running Chris Harrison-hosted series. “Burning Love’s” creator, writer, and executive producer, Erica Oyama, has a new project in the works. Deadline reports that she has a half-hour single camera comedy series in development at Fox.

“Based on Oyama’s life, the family comedy centers on Olivia, a single mom who returns to Alabama where her Japanese karate-master father still lives and teaches,” the source summarizes. “She joins the family business while enlisting her father’s help in toughening up her pessimistic nine-year-old son.”

A parody of “The Bachelor” and its spinoffs, “Burning Love” originally debuted on the web on Yahoo! Screen’s Comedy Channel before being picked up by E!. The Emmy-nominated series ran for three seasons. Its rotating cast included Jennifer Aniston, Kristen Bell, Malin Akerman (“Billions”), June Diane Raphael (“Grace and Frankie”), and Natasha Leggero (“Another Period”).

“Children’s Hospital,” “Ntsf:sd:suv,” and “The Eric Andre Show” are among Oyama’s other credits.

“It’s just so funny to hear, ‘female comedies are so hot right now,’ because, of course, they’re just comedies that have females in them,” Oyama said in a 2014 interview. “I guess it’s just encouraging that everyone’s sort of like, ‘Yes, these women are hilarious, and we should be watching them as much as we’re watching these guys be ridiculous, too.’ I hope it keeps going. I want to be a part of it, of writing it. Obviously, women are just as funny — it’s such a silly discussion that people are still having,” she emphasized.

Family Comedy from Erica Oyama in Development at Fox was originally published in Women and Hollywood on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

Watch the Short Films, Music Videos, and Commercials From the Directors of ‘Swiss Army Man’

Swiss Army Man, which hits theaters this Friday, has been making waves with its already-infamous title as the odd, farting corpse drama that shook and divided Sundance this year. Following a hopeless man (Paul Dano) stranded on a deserted island who finds a companion in a talking corpse (Daniel Radcliffe). One can see our review here. The minds behind the madness are the directing duo DanielsDaniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, hence the name — and while this marks their feature debut, the pair have been working together for years.

Beginning in 2010, the two created a Vimeo and uploaded the official video for The Hundred in the Hands’ song “Pigeons.” From there, they spent the next five years crafting an assortment of commercials, music videos, skits, and short films — all seemingly working towards the distillation and realization of their collective cinematic voice with Swiss Army Man. Their most recent short, Interesting Ball,

'Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates' Red Band Trailer Scores with Efron and DeVine
Back in February, we showed you a first look at what could be one of this summer's most outrageous comedies, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, arriving in theaters July 8. Today, 20th Century Fox has taken things up a notch by releasing an R-rated red band trailer, which features plenty of adult language. Zac Efron teams up with Workaholics star Adam DeVine as the title characters, whose search for dates does not go as planned.

The story centers on hard-partying brothers Mike (Adam Devine) and Dave (Zac Efron), who place an online ad to find the perfect dates (Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza) for their sister's Hawaiian wedding. Hoping for a wild getaway, the boys instead find themselves outsmarted and out-partied by the uncontrollable duo who join them on their adventure. This comedy from 20th Century Fox is slated to hit theaters July 8, going up against the animated comedy The Secret Life of Pets.

‘Let's Be Cops’ Review: Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans, Jr. Have Too Few Good Jokes in Their Holsters

‘Let's Be Cops’ Review: Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans, Jr. Have Too Few Good Jokes in Their Holsters
It would be unfair to cite “Let's Be Cops” for being completely unfunny, but the movie at least deserves a warning for carrying so little actual humor over the course of its running time. A mild chuckle every five minutes or so doesn't justify the predictable slog of this mistaken-identity farce. If nothing else, it's an object example of the importance of writing. The cast is loaded with people who have been hilarious elsewhere — Damon Wayans, Jr. (of the brilliant, gone-too-soon “Happy Endings”), Jake Johnson (“Drinking Buddies”), Rob Riggle (“Ntsf:sd:suv::”), and Keegan-Michael Key (“Key & Peele”), to name just...

Robot Chickens and Selfish Milkshakes: 'Adult Swim' 101

There was a certain point in history, somewhere between The Simpsons and Daria, when TV animation ceased to be the sole provenance of kids drooling over their morning bowls of Lucky Charms. These days, cartoons for grown-ups are not only ubiquitous, but hilariously twisted and high-quality to boot — and that's due in large part to a phenomenon called Adult Swim. What began as a freaky little block of late-night programming has evolved into a vast, even-freakier universe of animated and live-action series with a sardonic, absurdist sense of humor that's
