User Reviews

Risky challenge, revealing pieces, insightful and emotional backstories, obscure judgements, disappointing paintings, predictable results but inspiring winner
15 August 2010 | by igoatabaseSee all my reviews

With two good contestants gone last time one statement became obvious, no one is safe. Like driving this challenge was a dangerous and intriguing journey. I was specially surprised that one of the competitors decided to get out of its comfort zone. But taking risks can pay off so let's say it was for the best. We have a lot to learn from the mistakes we make. As for the thematic it felt like a promotion for some charismatic cars brand but let's forget about it. I think creating an art piece that make you feel something is a very humanist idea. It was also an interesting way to trick the competitors in revealing themselves even more. From narcissism to neverending love there were plenty of motivational figures to inspire them. In fact you should find some of their works quite touching, specially because some of the contestants backstories were covered. However I found the drama over the top and I'm starting to question the genuinity of one specific "character" and the supposed on going romance, that reminded me of Top Chef's season 5. Moreover there're artists I just don't get. It's specially annoying when the judges only have good comments about their pieces. And their obscure explanations don't help, making things even less accessible. But even if many paintings were conventional or bad the winner's work stood above all the others. In fact the results were predictable, specially considering what happened in the previous installments. To sum things you can only applause the idea and execution. There was even something martial about it. From its interactivity to its meaning I can't see anyone who wouldn't like it. And the best part is that you don't need a degree in visual arts to get it. Isn't simplicity the ultimate sophistication after all ?
