Spartacus continues to train in Batiatus' gladiatorial combat school. His tempestuous co-operation given in exchange for Batiatus' promise to search for Sura. Meanwhile Batiatus' money troubles and the drought continue. With the Vulcanalia approaching, Spartacus is determined to get nominated to the primus, the feature attraction, though it means fighting the undefeated Crixus.

Crixus fought in the style of Murmillo, which was fashioned after Gaul warriors. Spartacus fought (initially) in the style of Thraex which was fashioned after Thracian warriors. A common theme of Gladiatorial games, was to pit these two styles against each other. See more
Dominus tells Spartacus he made a mistake approaching his felled sparring partner to which Spartacus replies it would be a difficult feat from his backside. He appears to have forgotten he struck his first killing blow in the arena when he had been knocked to the ground. See more
