In early 2011 a Final Mix version of this game was released exclusively in Japan similar to previous Final Mix releases for Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II. This version would incorporate the features used in the International versions of Birth by Sleep and add in several new features such as new bosses, the addition of Critical Difficulty Mode (last seen in KHII Final Mix), a new Secret Episode, and several other tweaks.
The Final Mix version of Birth by Sleep was later remastered in HD as part of Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix (2014) on the PS3 and was also released outside of Japan for the first time. This version would greatly modify the controls for the PS3's control system, as well removing the previous multiplayer features as this is now a console instead of a handheld game (places like the Mirage Arena are now single-player only). It would later be ported over to the PS4 and released as part of Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix (2017).
