The Angry Video Game Nerd (2004– )
User ReviewsReview this title
The acting is great, the humor is perfect!
and of course the special-effects in the later episodes are great for an amateur (although i find it a little wrong calling him an amateur).
It's also interesting to look at bad old games.
and you've got to love the theme song! great work by Kyle Justin.
the guest appearances are funny as s**t! most of them are by Mike Matei.
i recommend this to everyone with a sense of humor.
and i don't think i'm exaggerating when i'm giving it a 10/10. a must see.
I've personally been following this show since he started on Youtube. And continued on to make the jump to Gametrailers when his show got picked up.
It impresses me how this show just continues to get better and more entertaining. If you go back and look at some of the earlier episodes, its easy to tell how much better the show has become. The latest videos of 2009 have been some of his most well done yet. Michael Jacksons Moonwalker video was a riot.
There have been quite a few people who have tried to emulate his style and brand of humor. But these other imitators seem to die off pretty quick. There's a reason why he's the best out there. And that's because he created this genre. That's why he is (and will always be) the best at it.
If you haven't yet seen this show, I HIGHLY recommend getting yourself over to Gametrailers to check it out. In my opinion, funniest, most original show on the web. I just wish they'd come out more often
James Rolfe combines classic Video Game pop culture and an outrageous sense of humor to create one of the funniest internet shows ever created. It's just always fun to see The Nerd destroy and rip apart the games he plays.
Of course my favorite parts of the show are when special guests appear and The Nerd always takes them on.
Now there's way too many good episodes to choose as a favorite. But I can only say this: Out of all the knockoffs that many have become after The AVGN, none will be as best as the original.
P.S. Superman N64 was nothing but a PIECE OF DOG CRAP!
There have been a lot of imitations, but none of these was as good as the Angry Video Game Nerd himself.
Since he begun, he's gained a huge fanbase, and he has even released a DVD set. It's very funny, and you can watch all episodes for free on the internet, so check it out!
1)The Writing 2)The THEME SONG 3)and The Nerd
If you'V heard of this before on the internet, you should definitely check it out, because it has to be one of the best ideas that has come across us in a while.
But within the people who create mascots... seems to be an uprising special group of people, those who I would call, Self-claimed critics... People that for some reasons plague a certain form of art industry. Some self-claimed critics rant about movies, other computer games... some are bad, some are good, but one thing is for certain... the internet critic business sure ass hell is growing fast.
I think that it's safe to say that Avgn is one of the first... or well, one of the first who took this form of entertainment to a whole new level. Not only is Avgn well written and funny, it's also well made and all in all just a High quality show (for home made standards). James Rolf also managed to create an lively and remember able character that both has some shi3 a22 awesome punch lines, and a in you're face attitude that really works. The Extra Characters also often play out very well, and most of the actors he gets on the show play their parts very well.
But what relay makes Avgn so special... is that his rage and rants seem natural, you basically believe him when you watch the show, and that something other critics don't have.
In the sea of Self-claimed critics, Avgn is one of the most original, and within the few... that actually have some decent quality. Don't watch crap like Irate gamer, just stick to the original.
So, that's my longest AVGN review. Also, I give a 10/10. :)
If you have never heard of the nerd, you are a deprived individual. This Internet series is just great. It's hilarious, original, and more entertaining than most big-budget TV comedies. James Rolfe is a great actor/producer/director and Mike Matei gets absolutely immersed in his roles, which include Mike Myers, Jason, The Joker, and Bugs Bunny.
Every new episode gets better, every one is hilarious. I would love to hear James doing a big budget film. Talent like his is hard to find.
Bottom Line: My favorite show. Ever. Excellent
The show follows James Rolfe as the Angry Video Game Nerd as he reviews horrible games, mostly from the 80's and 90's. He also review old game consoles and accessories, which are obviously crap. Occasionally, he'll do reviews of games based on new movies from older franchises that come out like Terminator and Indiana Jones. Sometimes a character from the game will make a guest appearance on the show, adding to the hilariousness.
The comedy is the speech. The nerd is very vulgar in his language which may come off as nothing special, but he does it in such a way that it almost becomes an art. Just watch any episode and you'll see. He really just brakes down the game (sometimes literally) and shows you just how bad they really are. On top of that, I'm just entertained by watching it. Comedy aside, they're good reviews of games and are very informative.
James Rolfe has been really committed to his work and releases about 2 reviews a month, usually being about 7 - 15 minutes long and has been doing so for the past 3 1/2 years with nothing stopping him. In addition he review movies has his "You Know What's BS" series, Board James (Board Game Review), and a whole collection of over 200 films he's made over the past 20 years. James Rolfe, you are a huge inspiration for me and indie filmmakers out there. Thank you.
For me, what really makes the show work is James Rolfe's ability to make the show enjoyable for non-gamers. James does a great job of reviewing the games in that when he plays the games, you feel his anger and frustration. He backs up his criticisms very well, whether the criticism is for the bad control scheme or the frustrating level design. Criticisms like these, when they're not done right, can come off as a gamer just complaining because he is actually incompetent. When this happens, the character/reviewer does not create an impact on you because you don't feel his emotions; instead, you just feel annoyed by the character/reviewer. Fortunately, James does not have this problem; his criticisms feel genuine and reasonable, which allow the viewers to feel the Nerd's emotions, making the character someone we can identify with. Also, James does a great job of setting up the context of the time period when the games (or consoles) came out. In this way, he allows those of us who didn't grow up in that time period (and non-gamers, like me) to understand and feel the disappointment and anger that people felt when the game designers failed to do do a good job on the game or when the console didn't live up to people's expectations. Setting up the context also allows the Angry Video Game Nerd to be a representation of how people felt at that time. It's almost like a person from that time period is communicating with us. For me, someone who can review video games and make the show enjoyable for even non-gamers like me is the sign of true talent.
So, with all my praise, why not a perfect score of 10/10? Well, sometimes the jokes with feces can get a bit too much, and I never really liked the moments when the feces is actually shown. Those parts were always a little too gross for me. Also, there have been a few jokes that didn't quite work. I understand though that it is a comedy show, so not every bit of it is going to be perfect, especially considering that there are now over one hundred episodes. But overall, this is a great show. So James Rolfe, thank you for all the laughs and for educating me more about video games.
What I love about him, is that he can just make me laugh at the weird facial expressions he makes. A recent episode has him look in shock as he dies less then a second in the second game of Action 52. Another has him look confused and angry at a Pac man screen as a glictch shows it as... well, let's just say a mean way of saying homosexual.
Rolfe also does very entertaining movie reviews, some from the thirtys and some from today. He's great, check him out.
James' videos manage to be both informative and hysterical at the same time. His unique sense of humor and delightful screen presence make this series a viewing delight. James admitted he was maybe a bit naive as to how much games(especially bad games) have made an impact on so many people's lives, and he had definitely tapped into a deep-rooted frustration that so many gamers feel, as you watch with glee as he gives these games their just deserts, tearing them to pieces(both literally and figuratively) in the most comical way imaginable. He once said the web series is "dedicated to anyone who ever got mad at a video game."
Rolfe's videos are filled to the brim with some of most imaginative insults and profanity anybody ever imagined, and his popularity soon led to a fan-funded AVGN movie, which deals with the 1983 Atari E.T. Burial. The movie was mostly negatively received by critics, but James to this day delights fans with the Classic "nerd" videos, which will seem to continue to gain more fans.
Rolfe's outrageous web series spawned countless other web reviewers and a few imitators(the most infamous of which being The Irate Gamer), but none have the appeal of the original AVGN. It's just an internet classic
The Idea of the show is The angry video game nerd aka The Nerd takes you back to the old days of gaming not with the best like Zelda and Mario but the absolute worst that classic consoles had to offer which you soon learn is a lot.
The Nerd picks out all there flaws which are often plentiful rages at the game like you wish you could and sometimes even destroys the game in fun ways with drills fire grenades he's fully prepared for the war on bad games.
The Nerd swears so much and rants about games that make him angry with original quality insults you will laugh at again and again the war on bad games has begun and he is the cure.
If you enjoy comedy and video games then type AVGN into YouTube and pick a video of his by the end you will be laughing and adding AVGN to your playlist and subscriptions.
