Tongues are wagging in Candleford when the new school mistress turns out to be a handsome young man, John Delafield. While not hitting it off initially, John and Dorcas Lane become quite close. The same cannot be said for him and the Pratt sisters who have an initial interest in him but set off on a vendetta when he stops them from beating a child who was stealing in their shop. Unsuccessful in having him charged with assault, they then set about ruining his reputation. Lady Adelaide, basking in the glow of her pregnancy, takes some delight in telling Sir Timothy of Dorcas' new beau. Meanwhile, Alf Arless, egged on by Laura's father, decides the time has come to let her know just how he feels. Written by garykmcd
