Jim Mickle, Boyd Holbrook, Michael C. Hall & Cleopatra Coleman on Crafting Sci-Fi Thrills in ‘In the Shadow of the Moon’

Director Jim Mickle is no stranger to genre filmmaking. He’s made films about cannibals, vampires, and psychopaths, and won plenty of fans along the way with We Are What We Are, Stake Land, and Cold in July. In his latest, the upcoming Netflix title, In the Shadow of the Moon, he explores the concept of obsession in a multi-generational familial drama. It’s also a murder mystery detective story that has an element of time-travel. So, yes, it’s ambitious to say the least, and it’s also Mickle’s largest production to date.

The film stars Boyd Holbrook, Cleopatra Coleman and Michael C. Hall who all play a part in this massive storyline. While at Fantastic Fest, we sat with Mickle to talk about the film’s moving parts, how he loves getting his actors dirty, and staging large-scale action. We also spoke with the film’s stars

Movie Review – Haunt (2019)

Haunt, 2019.

Directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods.

Starring Katie Stevens, Will Brittain, Lauryn Alisa McClain, Andrew Caldwell, Shazi Raja, Schuyler Helford, and Phillip Johnson Richardson.

Synopsis:

On Halloween, a group of friends encounter an “extreme” haunted house that promises to feed on their darkest fears. The night turns deadly as they come to the horrifying realization that some nightmares are real.

When Halloween attraction documentaries achieve more sustainable notes of peril and terror than your fictional Halloween horror movie, you’ve got yourself an issue. Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, most famously recognized as the writers of A Quiet Place, try their hand at haunt-based exploitation much like Hell Fest and The Houses October Built. Descriptively titled Haunt, you’re sold as executed. October festivities go awry when backwoods scare proprietors lock unsuspecting patrons inside an attraction designed to kill, not spook. Generic as sin, scant on character development,

Sam Shepard, Rip: 5 Essential Performances That Illustrate His Genius
Sam Shepard was a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright whose contributions to the theater world spanned decades; by the time he started acting in movies, his career had already taken off. As such, even as he landed an Oscar nomination for “The Right Stuff” and continued to be a regular presence in front of the camera, the multi-talented writer-performer remained primarily associated with the stage. Nevertheless, Shepard remained a major figure in American cinema for 40 years in more ways that one: It’s his tender screenplay that makes Wim Wenders’ “Paris, Texas” such an emotional powerhouse, and he even directed two features, but it’s Shepard’s acting credits speak to his astonishing range — and the way he continued to evolve his skills as the decades wore on. Here are five standouts from a career so rich with talent that we can only begin to explore it with this limited sampling (sorry,
