Storyline

It's tradition for Ted, Barney, Marshall, Lily and now Robin to watch the Super Bowl together. The 2007 edition of the game is different in that they have to attend a funeral the day of the game. They expect to be home in time for the 6:00 kick off, but just in case they're not, they're Tivo-ing the game. When the funeral goes longer than they expect and they miss the game altogether, Ted proposes that they watch the game on Monday night in eighteen hours to keep the tradition alive, but also to avoid finding out who won the game before watching it. It's difficult enough for Robin to avoid knowing since she works in the media and Ted since he is tasked with buying the hot wings at a sports bar for the game, but it ends up being just as difficult a situation unexpectedly for Marshall. Barney, on the other hand, does whatever he can to find out who won since he's got a lot of money riding on the outcome. Written by Huggo

Trivia

This is another instance of Barney not wearing a suit as he doesn't suit up for Mark's funeral See more »

Goofs

Barney offers Marshall a Super Bowl bet, saying, "I'll give you the Seahawks plus six points for $500." Robin, who at the time is new to the clique, enters and delivers three lines that are supposed to show she fits in with the group. Two of the lines work, when she compliments the beloved chicken wings and likes a Super Bowl commercial. But in the first of the three she says, "I'll take that action but make it 4 points and a grand." She's actually made the bet worse for herself by getting two fewer points. This has the opposite effect than what the writers intended for the character at that point. See more »

Quotes

Ted Mosby: So let me get this straight. A funeral is the one time you don't suit up?
Barney: Have I taught you nothing, Ted?
Ted Mosby: Virtually.
Barney: Suits are full of joy. They're the sartorial equivalent of a baby's smile.
Ted Mosby: "Sartorial"?
Barney: "Of or pertaining to tailors or their trade." Suits are for the living. That's why when it's my time to R.I.P. I'm going out of this world the same way I came into it. Buck naked! Yeah! It's going to be awesome. Open bar for the guys, open casket for the ladies!
[high-pitched]
Barney: What uuuuup!

Blatant ripoff of Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads...
11 February 2019 | by rupertastubbsSee all my reviews

This is a direct steal from the classic episode of WHTTLL "No Hiding Place" where Terry and Bob have to avoid seeing the results of a football (soccer) match. Made in 1973, in the UK, so I guess they thought they could get away with it...
