‘Popstar’ Earns Highest Cult Classic Designation With Official Sing-Along Theatrical Experience
Box office receipts don’t always tell the full story, especially when it comes to the enduring power of The Lonely Island and their unique brand of smart satire and genre dissection. While the long-time creative trio — including Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer — are perhaps best known for their “Saturday Night Live” digital shorts like “Dick in a Box” and “Lazy Sunday” and their wonderfully deranged big screen adaptation of their popular “MacGruber” sketches, just three years ago, they made another cult-classic-in-the-making in the form of “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.”

Styled as a mockumentary examining the career and life (and incredibly bad life choices) of eponymous pop star Conner Friel (Aka Conner4Real) as he spirals hilariously out of control after years in the spotlight, the film sends up not just the music industry, but the entertainment complex as a whole. Plus, there’s at least one

Discovery’s Velocity Network Sets Date For Motor Trend Rebrand

  • Deadline
After months of buildup by its parent company Discovery, Velocity has announced it will flip the switch and become MotorTrend Network on November 23.

Tapping into the nearly 70-year history of the MotorTrend automotive brand, the network will double down on its vehicular focus. MotorTrend will be available in 73 million U.S. homes.

“Seven years ago, I had the privilege of working with an amazing team at Discovery to create Velocity – the only television home for fans of the car genre,” said Robert S. Scanlon, President of MotorTrend Network and Video Content, MotorTrend Group. “MotorTrend Network represents the next great content innovation for this underserved audience. With the network, the MotorTrend App and MotorTrend.com, we’re going to provide deeper, richer, more engaging experiences for consumers on any device, anytime.”

The 10 Best Lonely Island Sketches

The Lonely Island trio of Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer are no strangers to the feature film world. Samberg’s appeared in a number of films, Taccone directed the comedic masterpiece MacGruber, and Schaffer helmed Hot Rod and The Watch. But while Hot Rod had the involvement of all three Lonely Island members, it was a project that already existed by the time they signed on, so it took until Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping to get a fully fledged, 100% Lonely Island movie. So in celebration of that under-seen gem, now seems like an opportune time …

‘Barry’: Bill Hader Says Season 2 Will Be ‘Somehow Darker’

On HBO’s “Barry,” death follows the titular hitman-turned-actor wherever he goes, even when he’s trying very hard not to kill anyone. No really, he’s turning over a new leaf, starting right… now.

At an Fyc event for the show on Tuesday, the cast and crew gathered to watch a screening of the finale and then participate in a Q&A panel about the HBO comedy. Comedian John Mulaney, who moderated the panel, had the following non-spoilers reaction to the finale: “Boy, oh, boy! Shit!”

That set the tone of the no-holds-barred but hilarious conversation, made even more unruly by the friendship between “Saturday Night Live” alums Mulaney (who had written for “SNL” and recently hosted) and “Barry” star and co-creator Bill Hader. Much of the evening revolved around the two of them setting up comedic bits, performing various impressions or goofy voices, and miming actions that just

As a new month looms closer, so does the deadline to watch some of your favorite movies on Hulu. The streaming service has announced which titles will be departing in February 2018, and while it’s a pretty short list, there are a couple of noteworthy films that you should definitely seek out. Chief among them is the 2007 comedy Hot Rod, starring Andy Samberg. The film marked the feature debut of the Lonely Island trio, and while their subsequent projects like MacGruber and Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping are better, Hot Rod still has its moments and delightfully surreal/…

Hot Rod is 10 Years Old: 10 Things You Didn’t Know about This Classic Comedy

It’s hard to believe but the movie Hot Rod came out about a decade ago. Andy Samberg was still trying to become a well-known comic on the Hollywood scene and was making some serious headway. This film didn’t really do much at the box office but it did enough for Samberg’s career to elevate him in a way that saw his career really start to take off. From that point on most people knew about him and were content to sit and watch. Since then he’s been on the rise in TV and in film, and has done fairly well

The Lonely Island on the Creation, Release, and Legacy of ‘Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping’

In hindsight, it seems crazy it took this long to get a Lonely Island movie, but Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping was well worth the wait. After making their mark on SNL, helping to usher the show into the digital age, Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer entered the feature film world in various combinations with movies like Hot Rod, MacGruber, and The Watch. But it wasn’t until Popstar that the three were granted the opportunity to create a feature film from the ground up, together, and make it whatever they wanted. Producer Judd Apatow helped shepherd the …

Seth Rogen and the Lonely Island Say They’re Working on a Fyre Festival–Like Movie
By now you’ll have read all about Fyre Festival, the misbegotten music fest whose immediate downfall has provided countless people with their weekly schadenfreude fix. Perhaps less amused with the development than the rest of us — how could you do this, Ja!? — are Seth Rogen and the Lonely Island, who seem mildly annoyed that life is imitating art they’ve yet to create: “This seems like a good time to mention the movie we are making with @thelonelyisland about a music festival that goes Horribly Wrong,” Rogen tweeted yesterday.

The Lonely Island chimed in with further confirmation: “For real, thinking about suing #FyreFestival for stealing our idea.” Said trio — which consists of Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone — is responsible for last year’s “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping,” 2007’s “Hot Rod

Stuntman extraordinaire Rod Kimble is about to face the challenge of his life. The Lonely Island: saluting 15 of their finest moments

Gem Wheeler Jan 12, 2017

Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone are comedy trio The Lonely Island. Here are just some of their finest songs and sketches...

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping was – yep, it’s time to call it - the funniest film of 2016. For those who blinked a little too long and didn’t catch it on its brief appearance in UK cinemas, the DVD release is your chance to find out what you’ve missed: a hilarious parody of current pop music’s excesses that blends acerbic criticism of predatory gossip shows and social media mobs with a sweet story of three feuding rappers struggling to mend their friendship. The fact that this touching tale also features Seal fending off a pack of wolves, Justin Timberlake dressed as a fish, and a bagpiper playing a lament at a beloved pet turtle’s Viking-inspired funeral comes as no surprise

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping review

Mark Harrison Published Date Wednesday, August 31, 2016 - 05:44

Richard Lester's A Hard Day's Night is one of the most influential movies of all time, pioneering a genre out of Beatlemania and inventing the language that has proliferated in music videos over the last 50 years. However, most modern music acts don't go down the Hard Day's Night/Spice World route in their cinematic tie-ins and concert documentaries (in 3D!) are more common than narrative features.

If we had to bet on any modern music act reviving the band movie as the Beatles had it, it would be the comedy group The Lonely Island, who first came to prominence through Saturday Night Live's Digital Shorts and have released a catalogue of catchy numbers with hilarious music videos. But for Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer, it would have been almost too easy to loosely string together a number of
