The handheld radios in use are Pye PF1 Pocketfones, however that model had two units - the one with the external pop-up aerial is the transmitter and the receiver has a built in aerial which is the speaker grille. Quotes

A dramatic end to series 1
26 July 2017 | by studioATSee all my reviews

Wow, what a gripping end to the first series of 'Life on Mars'. It just goes to show why this show is so loved even now, and that when cop shows are good they can be very good.

Full of brilliant performances from both regular cast and guests, this has more twists and turns in terms of plot than you'd think possible for a one hour show.

I've thoroughly enjoyed watching Sam's story play out thus far, and look forward to seeing how things develop further in series two.
