As the Hale wagon train crosses the desert everyone's mind is on the Fenton Canaby wagon train disaster as they pass remnants of it plus the widow of one members, Byron Lowe, is on the Hale train. Canaby was found barely alive in the desert by two men from a nearby town but when they went looking for the rest of the Canaby train they found everyone dead along with the journal of Lowe. After reading the journal they assumed Canaby was totally at fault based on Lowe's opinion. Unknown to them Lowe was the one who left Canaby for dead and Canaby never refuted the issue as the locals ran him out of town. Chris is worried that he, too, is running into the same problems with water even though he has a bigger train with greater resources. When Duke scouting for water is brought in poisoned by bad water by the wild looking and nearly dead Canaby, Chris tries to keep his identity secret but it doesn't last as tempers flare.
