A Second Self
30 April 2018 | by Prismark10See all my reviews

I never watched Street Hawk when it was originally transmitted but I knew it had a nice synth theme tune from German group Tangerine Dream.

Basically Street Hawk was a rip off of Knight Rider, it is an advanced motorbike than a car and it manages to be even more cheesier. Also the bike does not seem to do much, it goes very fast and at the end of the episode we see it fire some bullets and a rocket launcher but it does not talk.

This second episode sees an earlier appearance of future mega star George Clooney or Gorgeous George as my wife calls him. Apparently he was the first choice of the creator of the series to play Jesse Mach but it was vetoed by the network ABC. I guess they regret that decision now.

Rex Smith got the part to play hero Jesse Mach but he is no David Hasselhoff. It is not easy playing these types of parts and Hasselhoff had what it takes to do it successfully, be serious enough but have fun with it.

Clooney plays Kevin an old competitive pal of Jesse who has come to town. They hang out a bit and talk about the old times but Kevin has been hired by a hoodlum to kill Street Hawk as revenge for the death of his brother. The question is will Kevin ever find out about Jesse's identity and what will he do if he does?

It is no surprise that the series was cancelled halfway through its first season. It is a load of tosh, this episode does not have enough story for its one hour length having to be padded out by several scenes of Kevin and Jesse racing each other in cars and bikes while accompanied by a cheesy synth version of Bruce Springsteen's Dancing in the Dark sung by a soundalike.
