SCTV spoofs disaster movies
19 October 2018 | by Jimmy_the_Gent4See all my reviews

A long and funny spoof of Towering Inferno is the main story in this one.

The first scene is a hysterically funny version of Peter Pan, with John Candy as Divine in the title role. Martin Short does a spot on impression of David Steinberg (booga-booga!) as Captain Hook.

A news report talks about a new skyscraper in Melonville, with a nuclear reactor on top of it. Guy tours the new building and meets a crazed German director (Candy) making a western there. Al Peck has a commercial for selling used fruit.

Actor Steve Roman (Candy) has a new show as a Puerto Rican judge and he struggles with the accent. Back at the new tower, Guy introduces the owner of the restaurant on top Johnny Nucleo (Martin Short) who is disfigured by nuclear waste. Also there is shady tower owner Norma Rayburn (Andrea Martin). Dr Tongue, Woody and Mrs Prickley are there also and a fire gets started in the basement.

Cathy Tudor has a funny commercial about volunteering as a kid sister to a neurotic divorcee. Then we see the tower going up in flames and Charlton Heston (Joe Flaherty) shows up as the fire chief. There are funny scenes of Andrea Martin as Rayburn with a double as Edith Prickley, who the others keep referring to her as Prickley's Double. Rayburn ends up nuked and the others slide down a pole. Johnny Nucleo is flung into Japan and meets Godzilla. In between all this is Count Floyd doing a promo for the "scary" Rat Pack movie Four For Texas.

One On The Town has Earl talking about the demise of the automobile and public transportation.

Last sequences are some quick tacked on scenes about a farm wife (Andrea) who looks older than her husband, a non regular (John McAndrew) playing a Shakespeare professor and Andrea doing a Melonville calendar for the week. Funniest scene is a game show called Let's Find Jerzy with Flaherty as Russian guy who hides and the contestants have to find him.

Last scene is Candy as Mr Mambo who talks about the troubles of the world and says just Mambo! An orchestra named Banda Brava performs to the end of the show.
