Al Walker, a notorious gunfighter, has come to North Fork to die. He has an incurable illness and, since he had once been a wealthy and prominent lawyer, believes he owes it to his family to have his death certificate read "natural causes" instead of "killed in gunfight". However, the Porter brothers--a gang of vicious killers and bank robbers--have followed him to town and plan to take their revenge on Walker for killing their brother, and they'll stop at nothing and no one in order to do it.
Lucas McCain and his son Mark return to North Fork to find Marshal Micah Torrance away delivering a prisoner to a nearby jurisdiction and everyone in the saloon quite drunk. He learns from Micah's temporary replacement, the meek Ben Waller, that renowned gunfighter Al Walker is in the saloon and is buying all the drinks. Lucas learns from Walker that he's come to North Fork to die and despite his reputation he wants to die a natural death and get a death certificate for his family stating so. Lucas sympathizes but when the Porter brothers come to town gunning for Walker, Lucas has to intervene.
