A vain, wealthy widow has a legitimate claim against Favor: the man she entrusted with 750 of her cattle decided to steal the cattle, and he turned them over to Favor to bring to market along with the other 2250 cattle in Favor's care. She initiates a lawsuit to claim her 750 cattle, but spitefully for her own amusement she is also demanding other damages that the local kangaroo court will accede to -- damages like forcing Favor to return the 750 cattle to San Antone. Upon the suggestion of her friendly lawyer, Favor dresses up and romances the woman, hoping to soften her up, with some success. Rather than lose everything (damages issue), Favor agrees to sell her the 2250 cattle (at a fair price) and have her jealous-lovesick-gunfighter-foreman and her brother take the herd to market at Sedalia while Favor keeps her company at her ranch. This results in a deadly confrontation. Written by chipe

A suit for a suit
29 June 2019 | by bkoganbingSee all my reviews

Unlike Bonanza, Rawhide usually never went in for the occasional comic episodes in its seasons to break tension. But Eric Fleming had a hand in the writing of this one that shows trail boss Gil Favor in a different light.

One fine day lawyer Harry Townes rides quite ungainly onto the herd and serves Gil Favor with a summons. He's being sued for 700 head of cattle which he bought from someone who didn't have the right to sell. Of course said party died of lead poisoning administered by James Drury, gunfighter, lover, and general fixer for widow Margaret Hayes.

Hayes never quite got the stardom on the big screen she deserved. In her younger days she played some sultry sexpots. Most notably in The Glass Key where she comes on to Alan Ladd. She's one here and it takes a man with a bit of drawing room charm. to do it.

All I'll say is who would suspect trail boss Gil Favor of having such charm.

Besides Hayes, good performances are given by Anne Whitfield as Hayes's daughter, Drury as the gunfighter, and Harry Townes as the kind of lawyer jokes are made about. Townes is excessively full of himself and his courtroom talents.

Nice change of pace for Rawhide.
