The Meldrews and Mrs Warboys are going on holiday to the Algarve, where Mrs Warboys will meet her pen-pal,widowed Alfonso. They are trailed by tabloid reporter Martin Trout, who seems to have mistakenly dropped a saucy film of a celebrity into Margaret's bag. On arrival in Portugal Mrs Warboys is mistaken for a prostitute and,as the trio escape, they are stopped by the police for speeding. They assume they have been put in jail but they are in the barn to their villa, where they survive off lemons before realizing their mistake. As Mrs Warboys discovers that Alfonso's wife faked her death to escape him,Victor's after-shave attracts a donkey which urinates in the bath in the villa next door, causing its occupant,a boxer who lacks aggression,to suddenly recover it on seeing Victor. Trout eventually discovers that he had the film on him all along but,as the Meldrews and Mrs Warboys depart for home,it seems unlikely that he will make it. Written by don @ minifie-1

Something beginning with H.............Hilarious.

Victor, Margaret and Mrs Warboys set off for a few weeks holiday in The Algarve. Of course things don't run smoothly, events take a turn for the worse when Victor accidentally pimps Mrs Warboys, and the three seemingly end up in a Prison cell without food or water. So begins a holiday from Hell in Portugal.

It's been a few years since I've seen this, in need of a laugh this did the job, I had forgotten how utterly hilarious this episode was. A long episode, it's a sign of how popular the show was that it spawned a feature length episode, watched originally by a massive audience back on Christmas day 1993.

The opening twenty minutes are simply hilarious, the gags are relentless, but as always there is a serious twist, firstly we see Margaret's fear at turning sixty, her anxiety over ageing. It then takes an ever darker turn as Mrs Warboys gets romantically involved with the dubious Alfonso.

So well performed, it's nice to see Doreen Mantle get more screen time as Mrs Warboys, Richard Wilson gets to do more slapstick then usual, wonderfully. While Annette Crosbie gets to play Margaret with a more serious edge. The trio are superb.

Too many moments to pick out, but Mrs Warboys driving that Fiat Uno along the mountain side, and Victor's mouthy telephone conversation. I love this episode so much, it saddens me that we simply don't get humour like this anymore. When I was a teen, Christmas was about Only Fools and Horses, Birds of a Feather, and of course Victor Meldrew. I'm glad I grew up with these comedy treasures.

Hilarious, 9/10
