Here Come the Boys
Hitchcoc24 April 2017
When Dick and Joanna come to realize that a woman, hanged as a witch, is buried in the basement next to the furnace, Joanna gets creeped out and begins the process of unearthing her. She supposedly turned a young man into a badger. Anyway, there are some really funny scenes. One is with a local minister, but, best of all, the first appearance of Larry, Darryl, and Darryl, who are hired to move the body. There are some great bits also involving George Utley, who confers with Dick (Newhart) about buying and installing a new furnace. Choice stuff.

Shows Promise of Fun Ahead

Warning: Spoilers
This is a typical first-season "Newhart" with a good idea totally wasted. Dick and Joanna learn a woman hanged as a witch is buried in their cellar. Later seasons would have had more fun with this concept and might even have had supernatural occurrences. Here, they just fumble with the idea, slipping payola to the local minister for information (well, at least they show a church in the community). And Joanna begins to respect the woman.

However, that said, this episode is enlivened by the first appearance of Larry, Darryl and Darryl, who would be one of the show's saving graces. Or, rather, three of them.

And the show has one of the best tags ever. Be sure to stay to the very end.
