Did You Know?

Bruce Dern's performance here is generally so unnoticeable that his only noteworthy line is "Shut up!" spoken with sudden gravitas to the theater director who is prattling on while a dead body is being taken away at the end. See more »

Death in the back seat

***SPOILERS*** The boyish and harmless looking Roddy McDowell is terribly miscast as out of work actor Donnie Benton who in order to pay his rent and food bills goes out killing taxi drivers and stealing their money. That soon ends up leading to a city wide manhunt that rivals even that of the "Son of Sam". We find out that Donnie's real passion is to get the lead part of "Monk" the Soviet cosmonaut chimp in the stage play of the "Monkey from Outer Space". The NYPD lead by Det. Adam Flint, Paul Burke, soon find out with the screenplay of "Monk" found at one of the taxi murder scenes that this dubbed by the media "Taxi Killer" may very well be an out of work actor trying to get the lead part, of "Monk", in the play.

Using undercover police woman Betty Harkness, Patricia Bonsworth, impersonating an out of work actress to trap Donnie in exposing his criminal activities by him impersonating himself, his evil self, at a seedy Greenwich village pot smoking poetry club she in fact ends up as his latest victim. That with Donnie playing out the role as a serial killer that she unwillingly tricked him into doing. Now an on the run Donnie needing quick cash gets his hard working Mon, Lousie Larabee, to folk over what little money she has, from working in a Bowery soup kitchen, to him who then, without as much as saying thank you Mom, takes off to wine and dine himself on a juicy t-bone stake asparagus & baked potato dinner at the Stork Club!

***SPOILERS*** With now a full stomach and bundle of cash Donnie does his monkey on a vine act with the police lead by the frustrated, in not being able to catch him, Det. Flint who despite his dislike of violence unleash his entire magazine of .38's at a fleeing and unarmed Donnie, that's totally against NYPD police regulations, where he almost in the process could have ended up killing a number of innocent bystanders who just happened to get in the way. Donnie's monkey-like acrobatics come to a sudden end by him trying to somersault his way to an opposite building fire escape where he slipped and fell some five stories to his death!

P.S Roddy McDowell finally did get his big chance to play the part that he, as Donnie Benton, felt he was born to play that of a monkey as the cute & cuddly chimp Cornelius/Caesar in the film "Planet of the Apes" as well as in three other sequels that followed it.
