Storyline

A woman is murdered during the San Francisco marathon and Monk suspects her married lover, Trevor McDowell, even though he was running in the race. Although McDowell disappears from the video tape of the race less than halfway through and reappears only at the end, the data from a computer chip indicates that he was present at all checkpoints during the race. After interrogating the murdered woman's ex-husband as a possible suspect only to find that his alibi is probably credible, a frustrated Stottlemeyer provides Monk with a brilliant suggestion--that the computer chip was passed off to someone else during the race. Monk meanwhile has the chance to visit his hero, an aging runner from Nigeria whom Sharona briefly suspects may be the murderer's accomplice--a theory Monk refuses even to consider. When Monk figures out what really happened, he must catch the murderer himself to prove his theory. Written by WyattJones

Monk refers to competing in a 1500-meter race when he was in high school in May 1974. At that time, American track and field was not using the metric system; changing to metric distances did not start until 1978. The 1974 race would most likely have been a mile. See more »

Quotes

Sportscaster: [Monk is watching the marathon tape while working out in his apartment] And, of course, our cameras will be there at the finish line and our microphones as well. We'll have interviews with the winners, the lead runners and also a coverage of the presentation of the trophy. And here comes the group that everybody's waiting for as they run through the Castro area. Once again, a huge applause for the ageless Tonday Mawwaka, still running steady and acknowledging the fans and he's loving this, and ...
