Storyline

After spending three weeks incommunicado on a fishing trip, Mannix returns to Los Angeles to learn that his buddy from the Korean War, Harry Endicott, has apparently been killed in a plane crash. Finding a letter from Endicott appealing for help that was mailed the day before the crash, Mannix decides to run down some leads in Endicott's hometown of San Francisco. But upon his arrival, Mannix finds the mystery much deeper than he suspected - when first several people claim to have seen Mannix in the past few days, and then he locates an apartment where everything seems to confirm that Mannix has been living in San Francisco for a lengthy period of time. Goofs

During the opening sequence the plane on the ground is a Cessna Citation (N10UC), but in the air it is a Lear Jet 24 (N687LJ) even though the pilot identifies himself as "Citation 10 Uniform Charlie" which would have been correct if it were the same plane that was on the ground. See more »

Quotes

Kit Endocott: [opens the door to her apartment] Joe.
Joe Mannix: Hello, Kit.
Kit Endocott: Hi. Come on in. Uh, can I get you anything, Joe? You want coffee to drink or something?
Joe Mannix: No, thanks. I... didn't hear about Harry until just this morning.
[hands Kit a letter]
Joe Mannix: Was he in some kind of trouble?
Kit Endocott: I hadn't talked to him in more than two months.
Joe Mannix: Kit, just what happened between you two?
Kit Endocott: One blonde too many.
[Joe lights a cigarette for her]

After all, what are old friends for after all?!
16 April 2017 | by MartinHaferSee all my reviews

This episode begins with perhaps the sloppiest mid-air explosion sequence, as you see a small airplane flying along...and what explodes is a helicopter! So much for special effects! Fortunately, the rest of the show really is quite good.

Soon Mannix arrives back from a three week fishing trip in the Sierras. During his absence, his old Korean war vet buddy, Harry Endicott, was reported killed in the explosion. When Mannix heads up to San Francisco, he finds that lots of people there know him and he has an apartment there!! That's all news to him and obviously somebody worked hard to create this false Mannix image. The problem is both an investigator with the insurance company insuring the plane as well as mobsters are after Mannix, as they think he was Harry's partner in some scheme! Can Mannix straighten all this out and get everyone off his butt?!

The plot worked well and the only slip up was the craptacular explosion....otherwise I would have given this one a 9. Very good and worth seeing.
