I Love 1984
29 July 2019 | by Prismark10See all my reviews

In terms of pop music a lot of thing was happening in music in 1984. Holly Johnson was the presenter and his band Frankie Goes to Hollywood dominated the singles charts.

Prince and Bruce Springsteen had big hit albums, Michael Jackson was still all over the radio and MTV.

It was Madonna who bought overt sexuality with the song Like a Virgin. The Smiths bought introverted northern poppinnes or as my sister said: There is a weird guy on Top of the Pops with a hearing aid, flowers on the back of his pants singing how charming he is. This must be a joke! I think writer Robert Elms had a point about them though.

Morrissey did have weirdness but it seems Johnny Marr was the real genius behind The Smiths. Listening to Morrissey's online rants these days what else can you conclude!

The top dogs were Frankie Goes to Hollywood with a little help from producer Trevor Horn whow truth to be told was responsible for songs that have stood the test of time. Relax got banned by Radio 1 and stayed in the top 10 for most of the year. Two Tribes was number 1 for most of the summer. The Frankie Says T Shirts inspired by Katharine Hamnett's designs sold by the bucket load.

On television Tucker Jenkins left Grange Hill and ended up on the dole. His adventures were followed in the spin off series Tucker's Luck. His audience were those people who left school at the same time as him and also ended up unemployed.

1984 was also the year of Trivial Pursuits. A very expensive board game that had general knowledge questions. Our family could not afford it so we just watched quiz shows on television. Apparently the Canadian inventors of the board game got very wealthy.

I think so much happened in 1984 that a lot was not covered. There certainly was no mention of the miners strike.
