Storyline

In his last appearance, kumu mobster Tony Alika tries to divert Five-O's attention from his smuggling efforts -- including PCP and a hired killer who murdered Kimo's wife and son -- by sending phony tips to Five-O which make them look "like Keystone Kops" (quoted in a sign at one so-called crime scene) who should be disbanded. This was the only 12th-season episode to be repeated in prime time, as the final telecast on April 26, 1980. Written by Peter Harris

Trivia

A TV newscaster who loathes McGarrett (the feeling is mutual) says on-air that, because of McGarrett's ego, "Five-O members have been resigning in disgust and being replaced by incompetent sycophants." Besides being a pretty good summary of the 12th season cast and production team, this is the only possible hint as to why Danno is no longer around (his departure was never discussed in any other show -- neither were those of Kono and Ben, along with less frequently-seen characters). Goofs

When the first team searches McGarrett's office for bugs, they use a gamma radiation detector. Later, when Kimo and Truck search the office, they use a metal detector. Neither would detect a radio microphone. See more »

Aside from having Tony Alika, it's a good but familiar episode.

The show begins with a raid on a warehouse. But, their lead on drug smuggling turns out to be a hoax to make Five-O look bad and start doubting themselves. After this happens a couple times, it appears as if someone is working for the mob who also works for Five-O. Or, there's a bug in McGarrett's office. But when a sweep of the bug proves negative, then Internal Affairs assume it's an inside job. This is confirmed when they find $20,000 hidden in a safety deposit box--and the envelope has Carew's fingerprint on it.

Several times during the 11th and 12th seasons, Tony Alika was caught red-handed having folks murdered. Now I know our justice system can be crazy, but having him indicted three or four times for murders and he's STILL out on the streets--that is insane and I cannot see any state allowing him out on bond in such a situation. Yet, inexplicably, Alika is back and guess what...he's having people killed!! In addition, he's doing something very familiar on "Hawaii Five-O"--he's setting up the team and trying to destroy McGarrett's fine reputation. Yes, very familiar as it seems that such things have been tried at least a half dozen times before on the show.

Despite the show not being very original and having Alika, it is very watchable--something you can't say about a lot of season 12's shows. They were generally boring and stupid--and this one is only repetitive and a bit illogical--a BIG improvement! And, at least it's the last appearance by Ross Martin as Alika!!
